the only way a dr will know what antidepressant to prescribe is to get a good history and go from there. Even then you may need to try a few before you get the right one and the right dose. this is one of those things that you can't just take a blood test or x-ray and have the answer. I wish there was a test--it would save a lot of heartache.

Even under the care of a doctor, finding the right antidepressant is often a matter of trial and error, especially since the most effective therapy is often a combination of two or more drugs. A doctor will know the difference between a normal side effect and a dangerous reaction. DO NOT play around with depression -- it's not worth it. The wrong drug can make things MUCH worse.

The best way to find out anything is write down the symtoms you think you have and compare them with the dx's of depression. The one big problem with NOT seeing a doctor is alot od symtoms are the same or run together with many differant dx's. And there are so many drugs out there that are taken for so many differant things. Her is a example I take a blood preasure medication but I have never had a problem with my blood preasure I take the medication for migraines. The one huge advantage with seeing a doctor is it is done in a third person thing, they can see you and talk to you and notice something you have not been able to see for your self. Be carful with self Dx'ing it can be dangerous. However you can do research on symtoms and medication and take what you learned to your doctor to assist them and it also shows them that you are in contol of your body and that you know what you are taking about.

The only way to find out which medication is right for you is to:
1. See a good Dr who knows what they are talking about, medications may not even be the answer for you.
2. Educate yourself as much as possible about Depression and it's treatments.
3. Listen to your body, afterall you know yourself best!
Think positively, like yourself, set realisitc goals, talk out your problems, be assertive and balance work, rest & play.

G'day Ihatephilcollins,
Thank you for your question.
I would see a doctor or a psychiatrist. You can become informed by looking at a website if it is a reliable site but I wouldn't take chances with your health.
It is unlikely that you would be able to get drugs without a prescription in any case. If you could, it wouldn't be from a legitimate source so you would be taking risks in any event.
You shouldn't self-medicate psychiatric drugs.
I have attached sources for your reference.
Regards

Like others said, this is really a doctor's question. When you ask about it, make a point of asking about side effects. Many antidepressants are infamous for reducing libido, but some, like Wellbutrin, are not. There are many different kinds of ADs out there, so it make time to find one that works. If one doesn't work, don't give up hope, ask for another kind. Good luck!

Go for the doctor, he is giving me free meds (samples and trial packs) until we find the right drug and right dose. It's cheaper in the end if thats what u are worried about.
And if money is a problem, tell him! He will start with trying one thats cheap, like he did with me. I'm currently on EFFEXOR and feeling lots better in a few months. ANd i did not need a psychiatrist to get them, your family doctor can prescribe.
Hope u get well!

There are some websites...not sure what they are...that give tests that you fill out to tell you the type that would be right for you. I think it's usually a general health questionarre, and then a family background. I inserted a web address that might be helpful. Definitley go to a doctor to get their input as well. Best of luck. : )

maybe you dont need to use medication. i work with the subconsious mind. journey therapy, hypnotherapy. nlp and other modalities, these get to the root of WHY you are feeling depressed not just masking the symptoms. anti depressants may work for a while but clearing the things that are making you feel depressed may last a life time.

Trial and error. Keep seeing your doc til you get the right combo
I would suggest you see a specialist(psychiatrist) and not just you family Doc. Might only take one trial to find the right one...might take a few more. Just keep trying til you get it right....Whatever you do..don't give up...there is help and right medication out there.
