1 Thess 4:17 is the verse cited, As to the source, it and Pentecostalism had their roots in the "Great Awakening" of the 19th Century. Popularized by Darby and Scofield, it was first mentioned in print around 1830 and has been traced to visions by an English woman named Margaret MacDonald.

You can choose from one of the two Christian books (Bible RVS Versions)
These are the ONLY TWO BIBLE BOOKS where you will find the word rapture written. There is no use of the word rapture in any of the other 18 Bible versions including The King James Version...

(The Message) Song of Solomon 6:11-12

One day I went strolling through the orchard,
looking for signs of spring,
Looking for buds about to burst into flower,
anticipating readiness, ripeness.
Before I knew it my heart was raptured,
carried away by lofty thoughts

(Darby Translation) Song of Solomon 2:3

As the apple-tree among the trees of the wood,
So is my beloved among the sons: In his shadow
have I rapture and sit down; And his fruit is sweet
to my taste.

This is one of the main verses that points to that theory.

1st Corinthians 15:51-53 (this is the King James Version)
51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

Vs. 51 says "We shall not all sleep" read that as we shall not all die. That would indicate that there are those living who will be changed instantly into spirit. The passage also goes on to indicate that the dead shall be resurrected at this time as well.

First Thessalonians 4:15-18 and First Corinthians 15:51-57 are the clearest references, but there are others.

although rapture(caught up) is in the Bible, we must also compare it with all the other verses concerning the same event, not build a doctrine on just one verse.
