Most retreat I'd say. Plunging takes real courage.

to plunge - to cast or thrust forcibly or suddenly into something

a bottomless pit is pretty much nothing, which would be the opposite of 'something', so i'd say you can't 'plunge' into it either..... jump... yeah...you could jump....
