You were not given a ticket for speeding, it was a ticket for driving too closely. Were you or weren't you? If you want your day in 'traffic court', then go for it. You don't have much to lose other than a couple of hours. However, do not get your hopes too high. You will probably be found guilty anyway.

In the future, be more careful around marked police cars.

If you try to fight it the judge will probably laugh at you and you will end up getting a higher fine. If he was going 10 mph it would not matter you still need to keep a safe distance. You are probably just a moron driver who thinks that it is your right to drive, and you do not realize that driving is a privelege that can be taken away not a right. I think you need to focus your energy on fighting something worthwhile like your own stupidity and get your priorities straight. I'll look for your court case on court tv good luck.

I see why you got the ticket. Some states are running campaign to crack down on aggressive drivers and tailgators. And they're really aggressive about it too. The point is to have people drive safely and to prevent some nuts behind you from runing into you during hard stops. So yea they can give you ticket for tailgating or weaving in and out of traffic cutting off people.

the law is 1 car length for every 10mph-so at 55 mph, you should have been 5 and 1/2 car lengths behind him. could 5 and 1/2 cars fit between you and the patrol car? Probably not-you can contest it, and maybe he won't show up-then you would win by default. If he does show up, you will have a hard time proving the distance between the cars. Good luck

Lets do some math.

At 20mph if something in the road appears to block your path and you need to stop you will travel around 20ft before you can even start to touch the brake. If your car is in good working order it will require another 20ft before you almost stop completely.

At 35mph you travel over 51ft before you start to slow down and almost stop 65ft after that. Mean you traveled 116ft from the time you went, oh crap to the time you stop moving.

At 55mph you travel more than 150 some ft before you start to stop and over 250ft before you almost stop. Meaning you went 400ft (more than a football field) before you stopped. Oh and that 150ft, that was in about 2 seconds. So if you are less than 2 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you, you are way to close.

You were obviously tailgating, fight it if you can but it won't be worth it. Pay the ticket, be on your way and don't tailgate anyone else.
You should be at least 3 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you.

Be honest with yourself...were you too close? If you honestly feel that you were within the law then take it to court...but I think you will be proven to be in the wrong.

Sure you can fight it. You probably will not win though. But it's worth it to try.
