my pit had all her pups but while we were gone today she either attacked or accidentally bit 2 of them, bad enough that we had to take them to a vet to get them stitched up. the vet told us to bottle feed them every 2 hours and to wipe their bottoms and stuff so they can use the bathroom. my question is this, they are about 24 hours old now and every time i put them down they whine, but when i hold them they actually sleep. so how can i get any rest if they are always needing me to hold them. give me some suggestions please , if u have ever had to do this before please tell me how u did it. also, how long can the bottle of formula stay out of the fridge before i have to throw it out. like would it be safe to get a bottle of formula and leave it by my bed all night so that i don't have to do it when i am half asleep?

i just wanted to respond to your ans./ quest. there isn't anything wrong with the pups, i think it was an accident when she moved them from the floor to my couch, (she had to jump over the couch to get on it) because i had her in an enclosure.maybe she go startled when she was carrying them or something, as far as returning them to their mom , they have stitches and she will mess with the stitches and could give them an infection , the mother would love to have them back, she licks all over them and knows that they were hurt but she loves them still but the risk for infection is too great for her to be with them. their wounds were very deep. their tiny bodies have stitches in several places. that may be why they are whining they may be in pain because i have done everything i can to make them comfortable.

I have bottle fed puppies before. They can't keep themselves warm. So I would find a heating pad and wrap a towel around it and make sure that their box is staying at about 90 - 95 degrees. They are whining because they are cold. Good Luck!

Talk to your vet about tubing the pups. This involves putting a tube into the pup's mouth and force feeding them. In the long run, it's easier than bottle feeding, BUT YOU MUST LEARN HOW do do this from a professional or you can kill the pup.

Are you sure you are clearing their bowels/bladder thoroughly each time after they eat? This might be why they are whining. They simply cannot void themselves at this age and it might be discomfort that is causing the whining.

Are they eating enough? If they are full in their tummies, empty in their bowels and bladder, they should sleep.

Also, some pups snuffle/whine/whimper even in their sleep. Could this be what you are hearing?

Is it possible to return them to mama? Have you tried?

Sorry to point this out, but whenever I've had a female so thoroughly reject a pup, there was something physically wrong with the pup. Only twice, but both times the pup didn't survive 36 hours after mama rejected them.

The formula has to be refrigerated after mixing. To not do so will likely result in bacteria building up and some very sick pups.

Yes, been there, done that with the round-the-clock nursing (female got mammitis, milk fever, and couldn't nurse). It's so very hard, but simply a part of being a dog breeder.

Could you find family/friends who can help with some of the feeding?

Are they old enough to take a bottle we had to feed our puppies out of an eye dropper another thing is let them whine don't pick them up and get them a stuff animal to sleep with helps them feel comfort... we put our puppies in a plastic kids pool laid down towels and they each had a stuff animal they whimper and whine for a while but when they realize that won't get them held they usely give up and just sleep... puppy formula can be kept in a fridge but has to be heated and usely it best to have new formula having a bottle out all night is not a good idea just treat them like a baby... good luck

Congrats on the new babies. The pups may not be getting enough milk when you feed them. Do you have them on a heating pad? They will need the extra heat since they cannot get the heat from their mama. Usually a well fed pup will go straight to sleep after eating and pottying. As for the milk, no, it should be kept in the fridge. I have been thru this many times. Good luck with the new family.

Awww. I just had babies too.Catahoolas. They are whining cuz they are used to sleeping on top of each other, get a heating pad, and some sort of clock that ticks, put them underneath a blanket then lay the puppies on the blanket. The clock is to simulate the mothers heart beating. As for the milk, get an ice bucket with ice in it and put the milk in there. Good luck

Consider getting a micro-fridge to keep the milk cold. And my advice is to just treat the pups like babies they're going to need your help so just take the reponsibility. Or you can take your dog on the Jerry Springer Show and have her sent to boot camp

To get them to sleep in a box..Put a heating pad on the lowest setting and put a blanket over the heating pad so it don't burn them. they need to be warmed snuggle the blanket around them.. Yes you can put your bottle by the bed for about 4 hours unless your bedroom is cool..then it will be fine all night.
keep them warm and snuggled like you do a baby and they will sleep..
they like being close..

Poor puppies. I suggest you place them in a box and feed them more milk, don't put milk in the fridge. I'm sure whatever you put in a bottle will be gone in less than 1 hr.
