I assume you mean a bacterial infection. The doctor should prescribe you some anitbiotics, and make sure he also gives you some Pyrradin(sp?) to remove the discomfort (especially be sure to remind male doctors, as having never had such an infection, they tend to forget that it causes discomfort.)
Most women can a bacterial UTI at some point in their lives. You can avoid bacterial infections by washing properly. Also, make sure to use the bathroom, or ever shower, after sex, as vigorous sex can introduce foreign material to the uerethra. Also, occasionally drinking some cranberry juice can change you pH levels, and clear out any populations of bateria lying dormant there.

women get UTI's a lot becuase we wipe ourselves and that spreads bacteria. drink lots of fluids, cranberry juice is highly recommended, and do hold your urine for as long as you can, then push very hard, this will flush out some of the bacteria and help you to feel better sooner.

Bacteria got into your urethra (the tupe that comes from your bladder and pee comes out of).
Something had to be in that area and get some bacteria in it. This usually happens from having sex. It happens to women a lot.
