Lying to someone you love is a crappy-asss thing to do. Don't expect to confess your sins, tell him your sorry and everything will be ok. Depending on the lie, you deserve to get dumped.
Be honest with him. Tell him the lie, tell him why you lied. If you decide not to tell him then you will continue to lie to him. A lie of omission is a lie nonetheless. Tell him and deal with the consequences. If you lose him, maybe you'll learn a thing or two.
Like lying in a relationship is the worst thing you can do. It's a fundamental breech of trust from a person who cares more about you than anyone else in the world. Learn that.

Depends upon what you lied about. Probably regardless, it is best to be up front with him, and tell him as soon as you can.
