1) Sin is literally defined as missing the mark, as in archery. No one is able to live up to the standards held by God (except for Jesus).

2) Yes - except for Jesus

3) People are born into sin. Just look at a young child. Ask him or her if they ate the cookie and they'll lie - even when no one has ever taught them how to lie.

4) Death - separation from God.

5) For a Christian, you are not in fellowship with God. Repentance and request for forgiveness restores the fellowship. I don't believe that you will ever lose your salvation, as Jesus said that you are in His hands and He is not fumble fingered.

For the non-Christian, it keeps you from a relationship with God. To alleviate that, one must accept the free gift of salvation provided by Jesus death on the cross and His resurrection, repent (turn away from) sin.

I'm going to have to answer these questions from a purely Christian viewpoint because that's the religion I'm most familiar with. I'm not saying the answers are right or wrong...just what I think.

1. What is sin? Just about anything can be considered a sin. Sin isn't like crime - there's no "reasonable doubt" clause. Simply desiring another person's possessions is a sin. "You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." Exodus 20:17. And that's not a misdemeanor sin either...it's one of the Ten Commandments, a felony.

2. Are all people sinners? Since you can sin just by thinking about sinning I would say that, yes, we are all sinners.

3. Do people become sinners because they sin or do they sin because they are sinners? People sin because they can't help it. We are flawed. We're born to it.

4. What is God's penalty for sin, if any? For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

5. Are there penalties that occur on earth for sins in a person's daily life? If you think about most sin you'll see that there are penalties. A person who sins sexually might end up with a disease or an unwanted pregnancy. A person who steals may get caught and go to jail. Even someone who sins just by coveting their neighbor's stuff probably feels things like envy, guilt, and a sense of not being fulfilled.

Q 1 What is sin?

Any thing you do that is contrary to the Words of God.

Q 2 Are all people sinners?

Everyone has sinned, does not mean they will continue to do so.

Q 3 Do people become sinners because they sin or do they sin because they are sinners?

You are not a liar, until you lie, you are no a sinner until you sin.

Q 4 What is God's penalty for sin, if any?

Depends on what kind of sin it is, there are three types
1) Sins unto death
2) Sins not unto death
3) Sins not forgiven unto humans

Sins unto death are those that are knowingly and willingly committed, that is you know it is wrong and evil and against Christ, yet you do it any way.
Sins not unto death are those that are NOT knowingly and willingly committed but done in accident or unawares
Sins not forgiven unto humans, is blaspheme of the Holy Ghost

Q 5 Are there penalties that occur on earth for sins in a person's daily life?

Yes, it is written you reap what you sow, So all humans regardless if they are saved or not saved, believe or not believe will reap what they sow. A devil worshipper that truly helps an old woman across the road, will not be denied his blessing from God for so doing. A Christian that tells a lie, will not be denied punishment from God for so doing. You reap what you sow applies to any human that lives in this galaxy.

1. Sin is a religious concept. It refers to any behavior or thought that goes against the word of God. The Ten Commandments works as a good cheat sheet, but the word sin gets thrown around far and wide, so it's best to stay on your toes, lest you sin without knowing it.
2. Adam and Eve damned the human race to be sinners by eating fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This is considered original sin. They brought sin into the world through their folly. How they were supposed to understand it was wrong to do this, having no previous knowledge of what it meant for something to be either right or wrong, is not explained. So don't hurt yourself trying to figure it out.
3. It's a two-way street. See number 2.
4. The ultimate penalty is an eternity burning in the fires of hell, but there is a loophole in the plan to get out of it. If you repent of your sins and accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior you can still get into heaven.
5. There are specific penalties for certain sins, but no one really follows those rules anymore, thankfully. Women found not to be virgins on their wedding night are to be stoned to death, for example. There's even a story about a man who gets caught collecting sticks on the sabbath. The people ask God what to do about it, and God tells them to put him to death. So they do. But God's not such a hardass anymore.

In Christianity:

1. Sin is a transgression against the Laws Of God.

2. With the notable exceptions Of Christ Our Lord, & His Blessed Mother, & quite possibly one or two others, all people are sinners, because they are born in the state of Original Sin(the sin we inherited from our first parents, Adam & Eve).

3. People become sinners by continuing to sin.

4. The Penalty for unrepentant sin is Eternal Damnation.

5. Some penalties which occur in this life for sin, are criminal records, jail, loss of family or friends.

Finally, before I conclude this post, I would like to address those posters who say there is no such thing as sin:

Since there is no such thing as sin, does that mean stealing or killing is not wrong, then?

All have sinned and come short of God and his ways
His ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts are higher than our thoughts, we cannot comprehend his ways or thoughts
Sinners are living in sin , so they sin and sometimes don't know it is sin
No one is perfect, we all do or say things that we shouldn't, but we can ask for God's forgiveness and he will forgive. That is his pleasure.
He said if we sin we have an advocate with the Father to forgive us, daily .
There are no penalties for any sin, except blaspheming the Holy Ghost, that is the only sin you can not be forgiven of, that is cursing God and his spirit, that he gave through the death on the cross, through Christ Jesus
God is a good and merciful God full of love and compassion, showing compassion on whom he wills to.

GOD Thinks, Does and Says.
Anything Different than that is Sin.

All People are Born with Messed-up Spirits.
All People are Born LOST (thank you Adam and satan)

All LOST People Sin (some way or another)
All Saved People Sin (unless they are Walking in Holiness--and even though their not getting Everthing Right, to GOD they appear Sinless)
---anything that is not of FAITH is Sin--

The Penality for Leaving the Earth for Good(what we call Death) with-0ut getting your Spirit Recreated (Born-Again, Saved) is GOD can't let you Stay in Heaven for Eternity.
HE still Loves ya Though.

Yes, you Reap what you Sow.
Some mens sins follow them to Heaven though, so be carefull how you Treat the Holy Spirit, even if you are not Saved. (you could get Saved Later).
Hope this helps.
