Well, I think that you should be teaching them the basics of safe driving and rules of the road from the time they are little (like 2). You can talk about things like looking before crossing streets, what the meaning of traffic signals are, talk about the signs you see by the road and what they mean, and about how we protect ourselves in cars (seatbelts, carseats). These are all things that you can build upon as they get older and come closer to driving age. I tell ya, my two year old sure can tell you what S-T-O-P means on that red sign, and will make sure to inform you of that yellow light you just went through! Children are little sponges, so take the opportunity to tell them the rules you want them to follow as you go about your daily life. My 7 year old always comments on kids she sees walking home from school... "Mommy look! They are crossing the street without a mommy or daddy!" It's these little lessons about the rules of the road that you can implant when they are young in order to build on the future.

The legal age to teach a child to drive (in the states) is 15, which is the legal age for a permit. It is highly illegal, not to mention very dangerous to allow a child behind the wheel of a vehicle any younger than this. Even if you have them in your lap and you think you have control, the dangers are not worth it. Not only does it take an instant to get into a very serious accident that can injur or kill you and your child, or God forbid someone innocent outside of your vehicle, it can also land you in jail.
Unless you happen to be Brittney Spears.

Yes two is too young. Not to mention if you have to push the gas for the kid it doesn't even count. All you are doing is creating a hazard for yourself and others. What happens if your kid is in your lap and you are in a car accident. Your kid has a better chance at getting hurt.
My son started learning to drive at 14 on back roads. (I live in a rural area.) He was more confident when he took driver's ed and had no trouble getting his permit. Now he won't leave me alone. Wait as long as you can.

I think you can always teach a kid the basics of driving and do it in a fun way, long before he/she is able to reach the peddles. Behind the wheel training shouldn't come until they are old enough to get their learner's permit though.

Drive what? A real car-yes. I'd wait until 15! But one of those walker type things that turn into a car, no. My son is 13 months, and we are trying to teach him to move forwards on that- he only goes backwards lol.

DO NOT LET YOUR TWO-YEAR-OLD CONTROL YOUR CAR!
Would you let your 2-year old handle a firearm? NO!
Would you let your 2-year old use your computer? NO!
Would you let your 2-year old light your Bar-B-Que Grill? NO!
Would you even let your 2-year old pump your gasoline? NO!
We have 3-year-old twins and a seven year-old.
They have learned to control and drive a small toy electric car, and we are teaching them the "Rules of the Road" in their toy cars. When the time comes (14 or 15 yrs old?) they will be ready to learn to control a real car.
BUT NOT NOW!

Driving a car you mean? Dude, your kid probably has just started talking. We've got enough accidents on the road already. Please be patient and just wait around 14 more years.

Yes of course. You can buy those little four wheeled child cars at Walmart. Mine each had one at four.
