brand new every car is good, it only depends how well you plan on maintaining it, used i would suggest you stay away from volkswagon, especially automatics, they have always had problems, and parts are uber expensive, i'm lucky to have a cousin who works in volks' so he doesnt rip my brother off who has a jetta, go to a local garage? expect to get screwed!

Are you buying it new? The Passat is a nice car, with a plush ride, good handling, lots of nice options. Like most new cars, it's a very complicated machine. Make sure you have a good local dealer and some local non-factory mechanics who can handle it.
A used Passat might be another story. Lots of Euro cars (Audis, BMWs, VWs, etc.) are great as new vehicles, but after a while, the electronic stuff starts to go bad, and repairs are expensive. It depends on what you are willing to put up with. If you're buying it secondhand, check about warranty coverage, and decide what you're willing to endure.

Passat, no. Jetta, YES.
The Volkswagen Jetta is a superb car in every way. As far as the electrical part of the car goes I have had no problems. I have a 2002 Jetta with a diesel engine and as always I laugh at the high gas prices. Diesel engines will last twice as much and even more than regular gasoline motors. Buy a Jetta that runs on diesel and you will be a happy, money saving motorist.

Like any car, you need to maintain it to have it run well. Is it a good car? Off course it is, its German engineered. But that also means it is more expensive to fix.
If you are buying new, make sure you do all the schedule maintainence. It's worth it.
If you are buying used, make sure you get a carfax report, and also bring it to a VW dealership and have one of their Master Mechanics look at it.

It's great, believe me, I have one and have nothing to complain of, I bought a used one, 2003, and I have traveled with it all over Europe
Of course now it depends on what options it has (like heated seats, etc) that you want and might make you more or less enchanted
