There are several ways, try them all...

1.) Go to http://getfirefox.com and get Firefox 2.0, it's supposed to use less ram than previous versions

2.) Take a look at the extensions / add-ons you have and see if they have a memory leak.

3.) Change Firefox's setting for PDF's to save them to your hard drive - it'll stop trying to open them itself and save your ram for other things.
Tools > Options... > Content (tab) > File Types (section) > Manage (button) > type in "PDF" and change it to "save to disk"

4.) Try the "Trim on Minimize" trick
1. With Firefox up and running, type about:config and hit enter.
2. Right click on the new page and select New -> Boolean.
3. In the pop-up window, type in “config.trim_on_minimize” without quotes and hit enter.
4. In the next pop-up window, select True and hit enter.
5. Restart your browser

5.) Check that if you have Greasemonkey installed that one of the scripts for it doesn't have a memory leak.
I found this one out myself - a game I play (KOL) has an autoadventure script available from one of it's players. It has a slow but steady memory leak.
