If it's just "brandy" then it's distilled wine from grapes. If it's a wine other than grape wine (fruit or berries) then that must be included in the name, like "blackberry brandy."
Whisky (the Scottish spelling) is fermented grains (any sort) that is distilled. "Single Malt" refers to whisky that's brewed and distilled exclusively of malted barley and at a single distillery. "Blended" means it's a blend of malt whisky and grain whisky. "Vatted" or "Pure Malt" meas it's a blend of only malt whiskeys.
Whiskey (applies to any that's not from Scotland) is not as specific, and can mean any combination of grains. If it's a specific type of grain, then it'll generally be included in the name, like "corn whiskey" or "rye." Bourbon is one where there are specific requirements (grains, storage, alcohol percentage, etc), but it's an exception.

The process of making both are similar but the starting ingredients are the differences.
Brandy is a distilled spirit made from fruit wines. It can be made from grapes, apples, berries, pears etc etc. The most famous being Cognac which is aged grape brandy from France. The classification and subdivision goes something like this.
Spirit > Brandy > Grape Brandy > Cognac.
Whisky is a distilled spirit made from fermented grains. It can be made from barley, wheat, corn or any combination etc etc.The most famous or expensive being the aged Scotch from the United Kingdom. And it goes something like this.
Spirit > Whisky > Scotch > Blended Scotch.

Both are spirits which are distilled to get rid of almost everything but the alcohol. The difference lies in what they are before they are distilled. Before distillation, whiskey is a substance fairly simmilar to beer, made out of things like malted barley and corn (among others). Brandy is made from fruit, with the high-end brandies being made out of grapes. In fact, before distillation, brandy is simmilar to wine.
