I received a parking ticket from a private parking company in London, Ontario for $40! There were no visable signs indicating that this was a pay lot in the area where I parked. When we looked around after I got the ticket there was a pay box around the corner near the other entrance to the parking lot but it was not visable from where I parked. Do I have to pay the ticket? What are my options? Can I fight it?

Hey Scota ;)

Your question has been the subject of many current affairs stories here in Australia. We do NOT have to pay fines from private parking companies.

If in doubt, give your local council or nearest police station a call. They will answer your question easily and quickly.

Good luck! I wish you well.

You won't get anywhere fighting it. If you claimed that you came in the exit and did not see the sign near the entrance you could end up with a real-police ticket for driving recklessly. You could also be charge with trespassing on a private area, a criminal offense.

No one will believe that a driver went into a parking area in a part of the city where parking was scarce and didn't think think it was strange to be parking for free.

If the cops pull you over for speeding and you didn't notice the speed limit, will you pay it? I suppose the answer is yes. As long as there was a sign, no matter how well hidden, they have a case- sometimes, its cheaper to pay $40 than several hundreds in an endless lawsuit. Even a negative credit report can be very expensive...just pay it and let Karma catch up with them. Peace.

1) Yes, you do.
2) You must have passed the pay box and the signs noting that it was a pay lot when you entered the lot - unless you flew over the fence?

You can fight it by taking pictures to show that things were not clearly marked
