There are always risks for piercings. There are good and bad points to it, but the most common I hear:
1. infection
2. foul breath
3. broken teeth
You have to have really good hygene to not have bad breath or get infections. The mouth is quite a dirty place.
There is also something that people may or may not know about concering tongue piercings. There is a major nerve in your tongue called the Trigeminal nerve. This nerve innervates most of your face. If this nerve is disturbed, you can either lose all of the innervation of your face (and all places that this nerve innervates) or you can develop a condition called Trigeminal neuralgia. This is called the "suicide disease" because the symptoms are so painful, people basically want to kill themselves rather than keep on living with the pain. Health care professionals can do little to curb the pain, but one case I heard of (luckily) subsided when the tongue piercing was taken out. This girl was VERY lucky, her symptoms could have persisted after the piercing was taken out, so consider ALL of the possibilities when getting a tongue piercing.
It's a bigger decision than you might think!

A friend of mine and me went together to get our tongues peirced. It really didnt hurt at all. After a few days it started to feel a little funny and numb. I used listerine 3-4 times a day to wash my mouth out. My tongue was fine. Her tongue was really nasty looking. Her tongue had goten really dark purple and brown. It looked really nasty but it eventually turned back to normal looking. I don't have mine peirced anymore, but I do have a scar on my tongue where the whole was. Make sure if you do go, that you go some where that is a well known place and make sure all of the utensils that they use are sterlized. As long as you take good care of your tonuge and clean it regularly everything should be ok. Good luck. Oh yeah, one more thing, if you do get it peirced make sure that the balls are always screwed on tight. I have swallowed a few of them.

I saw the article below in the local paper. Why risk the health problems?
CHICAGO Her doctor says the teenager with "horrendous pain" in her face was lucky it went away -- when she removed her tongue jewelry.
A nerve disorder sometimes called "suicide disease" because of its excruciating pain is among the latest complications linked to tongue piercing.
The complaint detailed in the Journal of the American Medical Association joins a list that includes tetanus, heart infections, brain abscess, chipped teeth and receding gums. One woman developed so much scar tissue it resembled what she called a "second tongue."
An Italian neurosurgeon who reported the nerve affliction says it's an "extremely rare complication." But the patient in the report -- now 21 -- says her advice to people considering tongue piercing is, don't do it.

OK, I generally am not against piercing , but you kinda asked for horror stories so here goes.. my Stepdaughter has had a tongue stud for a few years now. Evidently, she accidentally bit it and cracked two teeth. Not realizing she had done so until she went to the Dentist with a tooth ache. The dentist gave her two choices ..crowns at $1800 or pull the teeth. Not wanting to tell her mother and I what had happened and not having the cash she had her teeth pulled. Now at 27 she has a large gap where her teeth were. I think this is a good enough reason not to have it done, but, it is your decision.

I really don't know about where you can go about research but from my own experience I went to get my tongue pierced 3 different times and each time it got infected. If you don't like pain don't get it done because it does hurt.

It is not a very dangerous procedure at all. The piercer will clamp your tounge and jab a needle through the middle of your tounge. It will feel weird at first, and it will begin to swell, making it hard for you to talk and eat. You will need to use listerine after every time you put something in your mouth, to keep it clean. I had one for five years and loved it. Eventually though, it began to chip off pieces of my teeth and I had to take it out. You can get rubber on the end of your barbell, which would probably prevent that from happening. Have fun!

Lip, is a 80's thing. and I have never seen a eyelid piercing. But I would get a marilyn Monroe piercing though, looks good.

My grandson wanted his tongue pierced. When he went to get it pierced, they told him no because of some nerve too close to the surface of his tongue. It's a good thing he listened because he asked his doctor if that was true. She told him yes. If the piercing wasn't done right, he could loose sensation on his tongue.

I had mine done some time ago. I had it for about 5 years before removing it. Yes, there are and can be some risks. Your tongue can swell cutting off your airsupply for one. Infection is stopped by using mouthwash and frequent swishing.
