My husband wants to name our baby Nicholas after his best friend from highschool who was killed by a drunk driver. I would have no problem with that other than the fact our last name is Nicholson. Am I crazy for telling him no? I don't want our child to be one of those kids when you here there name you wonder if there parents were drunk when they named them.

lol.. I know a Hugh Hughes. It is weird. Gets a bit confusing. I think, maybe give him another name, but you could always nickname him Nick or something? Try and tell your husband that although its a beautiful thing to do (name a child after a loved one, friend etc) you have to think of what that child will go through growing up. Kids can be very mean at times, and will tease other children about anything! And having a double name like that would make it very easy for nasty kids to pick on him. Also think of the poor little guy when he's learning to write his name.. he'll probably get confused himself! :)

No, you are not crazy... Nicholas Nicholson is pretty repetitive... one of the guys on our local news station here is named Jeff Jeffers and EVERY time i hear his name I wonder what his parents were thinking. Ask your husband about Nicholas's middle name... (or if his last name sounds like a first name...?)

If your husband really wants to name your baby Nicholas, you could always have a good middle name and call your son by it... and if not, Nick Nicholson actually sounds pretty powering. Anyone who meets him won't forget him.

I would not do that to my child. There are other ways to commemorate his friend.
Perhaps if he is just adamant about it then compromise and name him something that starts with an N. Also look in the baby name books and see if there are other names that have been derived from the name Nicholas that you could choose. Some derivitives are very different from the original. For instance Bob being short for Robert and Dick being short for Richard,

What about using Nicholas as a middle name?

hey, Nicholas Nicholson is one VERY COOL NAME! even if you don't like it, you don't have to be 'crazy' to tell him. just say that you think there are better names to give and ask if he would like to consider. once again, that's one very nice name!

No! Absolutely not. Your child has his own personality and is not going to be the memory of your husbands friend. Stand firm and get adamant about it. Your child has a spirit of his own. Choose a name that is independent and apart from parental influence.

i would try to talk him into using his friends middle name or you could tell him that his last name is very close to his friends and that is a great reminder of him... i lost my best friend 2 yrs ago and i know what this means to him.. so no matter what be gentle about his feelings.. im lucky i had my daughter before i knew my best friend and get this she has 2 middle names and both are my best friends names... fate i guess... gl and congrads on the baby

I think that in this situation, with the meaning behind it, its appropriate. maybe your husband will let you use your maiden name as your son's last name... just a thought. anyways, the name will be special to your family so it shouldnt matter what other people will think, it will be your little secret... and if they ask, then tell them. then nicholas's(the one that died) legacy will carry on, and so will yours.

I say yes, it's always cool (well here anyway) when you have a double name, especially because this name is in memorie of an innocent life taken by a reckless person.
