My cat is 3 years old and has meowed only two or three times in his life! I guess they just don't have anything to say!

Hi there...just as some cats are talkers some are not too.

Here's an article about cats who don't meow from cat.about.com:

My cat doesn't Meow a lot. Is something wrong with her?

A. If this is sudden behavior, I'd be concerned, especially if she seems lethargic or depressed, and a vet visit would be in order. However, if she's always been on the quiet side, but otherwise seems happy and healthy, then it's perfectly normal, and it's just her nature. Cats are individuals, just like humans. I'm sure you must have a few human friends who don't talk much. I have four cats and two of them are quite talkative, while the other two do not verbalize a lot with the humans. (One, an almost 20-pound guy, tries to meow, but it comes out as a little squeak - rather endearing, actually.
Try "talking it up" with your kitty to see if she responds. One correspondent even went to the library and got a CD with sounds of cats meowing, and played it for her cat. A week later, the cat marched right up to her and gave a clear and vocal "meow."

Sometimes cats (like people) just need a bit of encouragement.

If your cat remains silent, just enjoy her for herself. You might even count your blessings, as other people are troubled with excessive vocalization in their cats.

Is your cat an adult or a kitten? My kitten, Cooper, tried to meow when we first found him - but he couldn't - nothing but air.... I figured that there was something wrong with his vocal cords, but my vet said that sometimes kittens don't meow well at first, or he could just be sick... I was always complaining that he couldn't meow. Then, after a couple of months, he starting meowing like normal.... and now I can't get him to shut up! LOL

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Your cat just may not have a reason to meow. But if you are concerned, you can always check with your local vet at his next checkup!

Cats are as individual in personality as people. You just have a quiet cat. Trust me, you can be thankful. If you ever had a whiner, you would be asking how to make it stop. I've seen plenty of those questions here.

Seriously, some cats are just more vocal than others.

My BF's cat never made a mew for years. One day I was "annoying" him in revenge for his midnight romp on the bed. I was not trying to make him mew, but when he was resting peacefully I started trying to "trap" his tail - just with a finger tip barely touching the top of his tail - just enough so he knew it was there, then he'd twitch his tail, then I'd do it again... and again... and again.. anyway, eventually he let one go!

My own cats are "talkers..." big time... and I talk back, lol... I think some cats are just vocal and some are not.

I have learned that some cats just don't. Ours doesn't - she makes an airy kind of sound, with sometimes a squeak at the end.

My cat recently lost her voice (which was a blessing, actually). Turned out she had a slight infection. Vet gave her a shot which was a combination of an antibiotic and a steroid. Voice came back fine within 24 hours (dang!).
