On the simpler cameras there is not much flexibility to adjust settings. Everything is geared to automatic operation.

But put your camera into Program mode, then page through the Menu to see what you can adjust. Also look in the Setup Menu. Often there is an adjustment for Exposure Value (EV). Setting this changes the Aperture to a more open position (+) for a brighter picture, or to a more closed position (-) for a darker picture.

You can also make use of the Scene modes. These change the Aperture and Shutter Speed for particular situations. For example, a Sports scene setting gives you a faster shutter speed.

If your camera has Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, or Manual modes, you can adjust the Aperture, Shutter Speed, or both directly. Check your camera and Owners' Manual.

Good Luck

If you can, it will be in the owner's manual. If you lost the manual, get a copy online at Nikon.
