I have now worked inside a jail for a few years.
I feel...and this is just my opinion, that jails are for most inmates, a
waste of tax paying money...and for the inmates too.
My idea!
Why can't the men(who are NOT murderers-rapists-heavy duty bad guys)..go to a Army boot camp!
With real life drill sargents, NO GUNS only army personel, and these guys...are worked the same as any soilder...but! not to kill of course...Just to learn disipline(which I have found to be one of their most missing elements to their lives).
Comrade-ship...and respect! and manners.....Now wouldn't that at 2-3-4-5 years be well worth tax payers money!
Stop a lot of mixing with inmates, who are a lost cause. And yes!
sorry to say, but some are totally a lost cause. Not all, but Jeff/D
kind ect.
If you think, it would be a good idea...you just have to say YES...if Not No....or explain, but remember..after 5 yrs, I see little change
if any..in these guys.Something else has to work!...

I don't think it would work at all. That scourge of the criminal justice system, the lawyer, would be demanding that the prisoner he represents be sent to boot camp rather than left with the truly hardened criminals. Judges would be challenged every time they sentenced someone to prison.
I think the basic flaw in the system we can blame on, of all people, the Quakers. Their concept of penitentiaries where prisoners would be reformed has just not worked. Punishment was abandoned in favor of reform, and the deterrent effect was lost.
I think that more to the point would be a definition as to what constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. The hardened criminals would do hard labor, and be allowed to work their way via good behavior into something easier, like today's prison system with recreational facilities, libraries, etc.

Boot Camp is a very good idea.My brother-in-law has done 22 years of his 42 years of his life in prisons and he always says when he gets paroled. When i go home to my cell.He misses the prison when he does get out cause they do everything for him.He just has to save his own *** but he is good at that,so he gets out for a month or so and ends up back in there and phones and says"I'm home"It doesn't bother him,he misses the prison, the medications, the glasses, the dentist, the doctor, anything he wants he just requests, except a lady, but what can i say.I think Boot Camp would be great.

in my experience, inmates would chose prison over boot camp. they like the freedom and benefits they receive on the inside. for most inmates, prison is the best place they have ever lived. they don't have to worry about housing, bills, laundry, work, medical care, etc etc. other people make all their decisions and pay their way. they even get all kinds of recreation opportunities. as for the women........well, just look for the inmates that have tattoos of naked women on their backs.
i was a CO in a max security prison and now i work with defendants and parolees. 9 times out of 10, the defendants want to go to jail instead of having to pay their fines and court costs and the most frequently asked question is "can't i just go to jail and sit it out?" inmates and defendants are lazy to begin with, they certainly aren't going to CHOOSE to work if they can get out of it.

There are boot camps for prisioners in many states, The judge can offer it to them. In most cases the prisioner will not accept it and they want to sit in jail instead.
In the US with the ACLU and other groups allowing inmates to have alot more rights each day.

if you work the system that long, you have noticed that the "system" does work as well as it can.
the ones who made a mistake and you only saw once. then there's the career jack offs. dont know any better and dont care to learn any better. that is what are jails are trully for, to conceal the ones that are harmful from society, the rest learn after one visit to jail/prison.
one of the best deterrents i have seen is the SCARED STRAIGHT PROGRAM for youth offenders. if that really stays with your question.

Those with lesser penalties could be made as soldiers instead of wasting their time in prisons. They should undergo boot camp and sent to Iraq.

The army wouldn't have the time or any use for them. Besides, it's not the place of the military to rehabilitate criminals.
