Depends on who area of the world they come from. In some places only the the hood(The female counterpart to a foreskin) of the clitoris is removed, but in many areas, part or all the the clitoris(Like the glans penis of the man) as well as the hood is removed, this is mostly done in african countries. The practice of female circumcision predates the Muslim religion,but in the Quaran Mohammad is asked about this issue and his answer was "To cut her gently" (only remove the hood), Unfortunately this is interpreted by many Muslim religious leaders as Mohammad condoning or having this cruel practice as being nessessary to being a good Muslim, when Mohamad was actually saying that if this thing must be done, than do as little harm to the girl as possible. The liberal Muslims see female circumcision as unessessary. In most Western countries the practice is illegal. The reason Mohammad did not speak totally against the practice is because female circumcision was a firmly established practce in many of the areas his supporters lived in and if he would have tried to stop it, he would have last a lot of political support.

it is not apart of the religion it is a part of Northern African culture
This practice has been in place since ancient times, before the message was given to Muhammad (pbuh). It is looked down upon by the rest of the Muslim world.
In Northern Africa it is not only the Muslim women that are mutilated but Christian women as well.

Islam has nothing to do with this practice, ask about Christians of this guy's country, you'll find that they also circumcise their daughter. It has nothing to do with Islam, but tradition of some countries regardless of religion.
It's funny that someone gave aziz_unreal79 a thumb-down! He's Muslim & we are - Muslims - are the most knowledgable among you in this subject. The question is about our religion, so nobody else could give a better answer. There is NO verse in Islam that encourages female circumcision. Circumcision is practiced because some cultures encourage it NOT Islam. Did u know that in Saudi Arabia circumcision is not practiced although it is one of the biggest Islamic countries? Also in the countries where circumcision is practiced, Christian girls are circumcised as well.. Anyway in these countries most of the people who encourage this act are uneducated.

Religion has nothing to do with it. The man who did this deserves nothing less than having his prick endlessly chopped off with a rusty steak knife in hell.
Islam was the first to stick up for the protection of daughters, who were treated horribly beforehand. Leave your biases and prejudices out of this, and maybe get your head out of the sand while you're at it.

I know they do that in Africa & it is a very cruel thing to do to a little child at the age of 5 while they are awake as well & some die because of infection & they have pain there all of their life when they have a partner.
its supposed to stop them from playing up with men because it is so painful

Yeah that is disgusting and unfortunatly unstoppable. Muslims are brought up to think that women are worthless and not even human. They dont think women are capable of anything and makes them completely chavanistic. They are really bad and they are really controlling. I am in the real estate business and I actually had to do a real estate closing and the man was muslim and he refused to let me do my job because I was women! As I was explaining the paperwork to him he told me NO shut up and go get me a man! I wanted to beat him senseless but I couldnt. Its just in their culture and its gross. Cant stand the men.

Is this question sounds good to you? off couse not. it is offensive, sicking, untrue and biased. Because only a handful of psychos would do such a thing. And it has nothing to do with religion. So please do not always relate Islam and muslims to any negative thing that happens. women being circumcised is only a African practice, probably man made, for their own pleasures. I have never read about this in Koran. I have never heard of it in my country.

They do not circumcise them per-say! What they do is totally remove the girl's clitoris. It is an ANCIENT CUSTOM started long before Islam, with nothing to do with the Koran. It was done by the Arabs to further subject the slave girls who they purchased for their harems to keep them from enjoying sex.
IT IS ACTUALLY JUST A WAY TO ABUSE AND DOMINATE WOMEN! ! !

I have heard this is normal practice for Islam. I do not know if it is true. Maybe some honest Muslims will come and set the record straight, one way or the other, for this question.
