Japanese is not as hard as everyone says, but I'd start with the basics, like Hiragana and Katakana. Hiragana is mainly used in Japan. But just spend a day learning the sets (vowels, k's s's etc...) and you'll learn Hiragana and Katakana in about a month or two. Just take a paper and write the character over and over until you know it ^^
I've included a great site to help you learn.

I studied Japanese at University for three years and it gave me a elementary stage and know-how of the language. I handiest grew to be fluent while I moved to Japan and studied for a quantity of years. I determined that being surrounded via Japanese and utilizing it in my day-to-day lifestyles widely multiplied the talents I lacked in listening, speakme and fluency. Making Japanese peers used to be additionally nice.

It is not an easy language for English speakers, particularly to read, because you need to learn about 2000 Chinese characters to be able to read a newspaper. German would be easier, but it depends what culture you are interested in...

1. No, not really. Once you get over that one year hump, it smoothes out significantly. Reading becomes easier, you get faster at it, characters stick in your mind more clearly, and your knowledge of kanji is able to expand quickly once you get past the year well (B or A grade).
2. That depends on what you mean by "the basics". If you mean enough to talk to a baby and read their books, about a year. (In that time hiragana, katakana, and very small, basic kanji would be mastered.)

Speaking and hearing Japanese are not so hard. But will you have situations where you use it? Do you have a plan to go to Japan?
If not, I recommend European languages such as Spanish and French.
