I am not sure what you are asking or even what you are cooking but the "liquid" (in this case eggs) is to keep the dry ingredients "stuck" to the food. So you would dip into the eggs and then into the bread crumbs. And by the way, if you are deep frying anything that you have rinsed with water such as chicken, meat or veggies, pat them dry with a paper towel before dipping in the egg batter. This prevents the batter from coming off while cooking.

The proper order for the breading process is Flour, egg, breadcrumbs.
You must first dip the chicken into flour so the egg will stick to it.
If you dip the chicken directly into the egg, the breading will slide right off.
Also, make sure to season the flour and breadcrumbs as well as the chicken!

The first two answers are correct . That is the generally followed procedure BUT a couple of times while making cutlets I have rolled the patties in breadcrumbs frist and egg later and I got equally good results so follow whatever method you wish you will get good results both ways.

Its a three stage process
Flour
Egg
Breadcrumbs
Roll your chicken drumstick in some flour, flour may be seasoned with herbs or spices if you wish
Then immerse the drumstick in a bowl of beaten egg to which 1/4 Cup of milk may be added to if you desire. This is eggwash.
Then roll the drumstick in breadcrumbs, I like to add some chopped parsley and grated parmesan to my breadcrumbs.
The process may be repeated up to three times depending on how thick you would like the coating to be.

I rinse my meat/chicken under cold water, then season it then roll in flour, then in beaten egg with milk, then in breadcrumbs and it turns out great. Actually the last time I made them I used ground up crackers and Special K cereal. Gee , it was yummy.

Remember this: wet sticks to dry. dry sticks to wet.
So if what you are dredging is dry (ie: mushrooms), then yes, dip in egg first to get it wet, then add breadcrumbs.
If what you are dredging is wet (ie: chicken), then dipin a bit of flour, THEN egg, then breadcrumbs. The flour step dries off the item, as the natural wetness of chicken or other item is probably not enough to hold on breadcrumbs.

U use egg whites 1st cuz thats what makes the breadcrumbs 2 stick! some people go back & forth egg2crumbs again & again! Personally I use buttermilk not egg!!!!

I ALWAYS dip in flour mixture first, then egg mixture (I actually use buttermilk), then in flour mixture again. Makes it extra crispy. Breadcrumbs will burn though, when frying. Use seasoned flour.
