I have a Ridge - my first. I had two Dobermans previously, a Labrador Retriever and several other breeds as I was growing up.

Rhodesians were breed to chase lions not attack. There are several different breeds that make up the RR. I agree that this dog isn't for an average pet owner or first time dog owner and a responsible breeder would screen for this.

I would do a lot of research and reading into the breed, maybe go to a dog show to hang out and watch and talk to other RR people. You might also want to try fostering a RR before making the huge commitment of owning one.

Be aware of health issues.

Disposition and Temperament: be careful of breed biases and myths. A well bred animal should have a good disposition and even temperament.

My own dog is very friendly with dogs because he's been in constant socialization with dogs at doggy daycare and in classes. He isn't good with children because I'm not around children hence his is very nervous around them. Which can happen to any bred of dog. Socialization is CRITICAL for any breed of dog.

Be very careful with children around your dog. A Rhodesian ridgeback attacked my 5 year old son. They were originally bred to keep lions out of villages in Africa and they can have quick tempers. They are also not good around other dogs. I'm sorry I can't help you with a name or a choice of sex, they just are not the type of dog I would want.

If it were me, then I'd browse the Babynames site or the 20,000 names site for African names - make a list of those that I liked & then, when I got the pup, try them out on her or him & see which name (or abbreviation of a name) suited.

Choosing ones that would be say something about my puppy ... there's names like :
Adamma - beautiful girl,
Ayoka - one who causes joy
Azizi - precious one
Dakarai - happiness
Deka - pleasing
Femi - love me
Halima - gentle
Jabari - brave, fearless
Jelani - mighty
Juji - heap of love
Naja - stoic & strong
Nalo - loveable
Rafiki - friend
Sukutai - hug
Teshi - cheerful, full of laughter

and loads more on both sites.

Good luck with your pup.

I HAVE A RIDGEBACK NAMED ROCKY. SOMETIMES ROCK HEAD. HE'S VERY LOVABLE, BUT THE MOST STUBBORN DOG I'VE EVER LIVED WITH. WHEN HE GETS HIS MIND SET ON SOMETHING (LIKE A CAT) HE'S IMPOSSIBLE TO REFOCUS.
