The other side of the coin is reserved for those who are critical of anyone who is in the military, but that is another issue.

People join the military for various reasons. Some people join the military to serve their country. Others join as a way to go to college, or to pay off college expenses. This day in age, most people join the military for the wrong reasons. A large majority of enlisted service members come from low income families. The military is sometimes the only option. In the 1940's, times and values where different, and people where more patriotic. So I would have to conclude that it's not always a "want" to go into the military, but a need. Hope this helps :)

Some of the reasons are: Independence, college tuition, Military training and career, Travel. In the USA we have always had an issue creating a "fighting Force" Hence, the creation of the Draft.
The USA was created in revolution and has had to fight in many wars. It is a statistical fact that only a small percentage of men and women are actually in combat. During world war 2, we Had many Millions of people in the the Military service. I was in the Military and decided to enlist because it was my duty and I would have been drafted anyway. So, I chose the branch and the time I was going to serve in the Military. I do not regret enlisting in the Military. I met many good people and I was trained to survive. Not a bad thing to know as we travel though life. Side bar: some of the best training schools are within the US Military...they also have one one the lowest "drop out failure Rates". Imagine this: a 22 year old male or female flying and maintaining a multi-million dollar aircraft or navel ship.

There are as many reasons to join the military as there are people in the military. Besides the sense of duty, and responsibility, there are the personal benefits, such as, education, and health. For some it is a matter of pride, for others it is, a family tradition. For others it is a chance to enhance, ones life experience. Each person, will have their own reasons, but the one true fact in it remains constant. If you can not stand up and be willing to fight and defend the constitution, the very fabric of personal freedom, than you have no right to demand others to defend it, or you.

There are many reasons for those of us that served, but the one that stands out the most is we want others to have and continue the freedoms afforded to us in our country and want to insure that no one takes it away from us. We swear an oath and sign a contract that backs this up and fulfill that contract to the letter. It doesn't matter which branch of the military we serve as we're all in this together, we serve our county in a uniform which we feel we are best suited for and do our jobs with self esteem in knowing we did what we could. I'm proud to have served my country.

Personally I joined the military because I wanted a change of life. I actually dropped out of college to join the Air Force. To me the military can be a change of a more interesting and different life style. In addition there are tons of benefits you get. It is also a chance to serve your country. =)

To serve one's country, gain discipline, learn skills and to get a free college education. I think my son joined because he was going down the wrong path and this was an opportunity to fix his life and make something of himself. He is doing a great job of it as Marine!

To serve our country and accomplish something in life as corny as that sounds. Carry on family tradition if your family is like mine. A purpose in life. Of course in the past sometimes no choice except to run, that greetings letter in the mailbox. And I am sure there are more than a few who like the money rewards today. Plus the citizenship deal if one is not.
