Well, it all depends on how many photos you want to take...and whether you shoot in RAW or the highest quality Jpeg...or RAW+Jpeg.
With a 1GB card you can shoot approx 100 photos in RAW (which are approx. 9.8MB each)
and approx. 260 photos using large/fine Jpeg (approx. 3.8 MB each)
and shooting RAW+Jpeg (well, add the two together).
So, I would say you need at least a 1-2GB fast CF card as the barest minimum.
The Sandisk Extreme III is available in a 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 &16 GB card!
And the new Extreme IV is available in a 2, 4 or 8 GB CF card.

P.S. i would definitely choose quality over cheap because a digital SLR demands a good fast card.

I've got a 1 gig compact flash card for my Rebel.

It holds about 300 - 600 photos depending on what quality you're taking your shots in.

I've got a few backups too. It's always a good Idea to carry at least 1 or 2 backup flash cards in your camera bag incase you go photo crazy you can change it out. But I would recommend a smaller size as a backup as you won't need much.

It really all depends on what kind of photographer you are.

Nice camera. I can second Petra's suggestion to get SanDisk Extreme lll. It's what I use for my Nikon D200... but then I use continuous shooting mode quite a bit where transfer speed matters. Here's some benchmarks for different memory cards on the 350D (the numbers for the 400D aren't up yet): http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007-7699
I use 2x 2GB, which is enough to get me through a week. If you don't go crazy, you might find that a single 1 GB SanDisk Ultra ll will suffice. These cost about $55.
At any rate, you just paid +1000 for your camera + lens, don't try to save $20 on a dirt cheap memory card - it will bite you in the ***.
