it is separate. Hadith are sayings of the Holy Prophet. They are not always the most reliable because they could have been changed unlike the Quran which has been preserved and is the whole truth.

'Hadeeth' means "statement" ... in Muslim world, it is known as the collection of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sayings and deeds. It contains various religious matters as practised by the Prophet (PBUH), it was transmitted through various chain of Muslims/companions and documented after he passed away. There is such thing as "fake" hadeeth and "authentic" ones. There are issues surrounding this sort of classification, AFAIK. There are Muslims who do not believe that hadeeth should be taken literally (per 'orthodox' Muslim view) - this include Muslims who think Qur'an is "complete". They believe only The Qur'an is (only) the protected Word and it is "fully detailed".
[6:114] Shall I seek other than GOD as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed? Those who received the scripture recognize that it has been revealed from your Lord, truthfully. You shall not harbor any doubt.
[6:115] The word of your Lord is complete, in truth and justice. Nothing shall abrogate His words. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.
Furthermore, the Qur'an itself has openly declared it is the "best hadeeth"
"God has revealed herein the BEST HADITH ; a book that is consistent and points out both ways (to heaven and hell). The skins of those who reverence their Lord cringe therefrom, then their skins and their hearts soften up for God's message. Such is God's guidance; he bestows it upon whomever He wills. As for those sent astray by God, nothing can guide them." 39:23

Some Muslims take the "middle" opinion, where it hadeeth should be complimentary to Quran. This is somewhat contrary to the total orthodox view, which most often take hadeeth as the primary item. This is because, the Prophet demonstrate the practical aspects that is dependent on situations (ie. how things in the Qur'an should be applied), where situations could change not not fully identical 100% in different cases. Therefore, some suggested the underlying principal should be the main issue.
The non-authentic hadeeth most often contain ridiculous information that certainly critics of Islam use to further their agenda. Ironically, during his lifetime, the Prophet (PBUH) has prohibited Muslim from jotting down hadeeth. This was quoted -within- an authentic hadeeth. I believe the Prophet (PBUH) was also concern about the alterations that might occur in the future, hence now we see the non-authentic hadeeth (altered) circulating around

Hadith (الحديث translit: al-ḥadīth) are traditions relating to the words and deeds of Muhammad. Hadith collections are regarded as important tools for determining the Sunnah, or Muslim way of life, by all traditional schools of jurisprudence.
The Arabic plural is aḥādīth (أحاديث). In English academic usage, hadith is often both singular and plural.
