Well the Gideons aren't Catholic... is that what you are asking?
The Catholic and the Protestant bibles aren't exactly the same and the Gideons hand out those little: New Testament * Psalms and Proverbs (this is an excerpt from your bible, if you will)

But there is nothing in them that is not in your Catholic bible. Really, whoever you are you should be thinking for yourself! Read what you will and evaluate what you read, USING YOUR OWN BRAIN! Talk to your parents or your priest if you are confused by something. Exlpore life and think, think, think!

The New Testament of the Gideons is OK to read. It has the same books as the Catholic Bible.. There would be a difference if it had the Old Testament, because modern Protestants have eliminated 7 books (they call them Apocrypha, but we call them Deuterocaconicals, and they existed in their original King James Version, but now they don´t have them because some of them, like Maccabees, support Catholic doctrines like praying for the dead. Since they don´t believe that, the simplest thing to do for them was to chop the Bible, so they see no proof for that, otherwise they would have to believe in Purgatory and abandon their "Once Saved, Always Saved" doctrine, which is antibiblical and not all of them believe). Luther wanted to eliminate other books, like James, but they did not let him do it

If you are Catholic, stick with a Catholic bible. They have additional books (deuterocanonical). However, these deuterocanonical books are in the Old Testament, so in theory, a bible containing only the New Testament should be OK. Still, I would find yourself a good Catholic bible (like the New Jerusalem Bible) and read that!

This is a normal and accurate bible. The bible consists of an "old" and "new" testament. The Gideons bible that they handed to you is the New testament only with two books from the old testament in it (psalms and proverbs) I have one and use it quite often. No matter your religion, if you believe in Jesus than this bible will guide you and direct you in your faith. Go for It!

I can't think of any reason why you would not want to read it. It's just a copy of the New Testament that also includes the Psalms and Proverbs. I have a Gideon Bible from where they were giving them out at my college. It is green.

The different colors are for different things. For example, the ones they give out at colleges are obviously green. Ones in hotels will be a different color. Ones given in hospitals another color, and so on.

The Gideons have been placing free Bibles in hotels for years God Bless Them. There is nothing wrong with that it says same as Catholic Bible just didn't "add" some things catholic's did.

next time you see those guys just tose the book back to them and tell them you will pray that they find god. king james version and gideons is not a catholic bible it has some books removed catholic version is still intact see catholic church was the first organized form of christianity the other churchs were part of breakoffs they morphed the bible and claim they are right but if you ask any historian they will agree. so hold your catholic faith close to your heart and remember being a good catholic is hard

Listen dear friend.
Read anything you get in your hands, but do not be shaken by it.
Reading does not have to be felt as an agression to your beliefs, faith, ideas etc...
Read anything to understand the diversity of the human mind, BUT KEEP YOUR IDENTITY, and be more and more aware that human mind is so diverse, that a whole lifetime will never be enough for humans like us to gather it all.
Do not panic. get any book, and you could as well not read it.
Reading can be also understanding your enemy or your friend. It is always an opened door to the wide wide world.
Relax !... and you will be a fantastic catholic !

I think it would be okay, but maybe you should ask your priest first. The Gideons are the group that pays for Bibles to pass out to students. I got one when I was a freshman in college. They're the same group that puts Bibles in hotel rooms. There's nothing sinister about it, and the Bibles are usually the King James Version. If you're concerned though, ask your priest.
