N Korea wanted to talk one on one with the US. Since that didn't work in the past ( N Korea duped the Clinton administration) Bush demanded that they engage in six party talks including countries from the region. China, S Korea and Japan. They refused and started firing off some dud nukes. Eventually they realized that Bush wasn't going to back down, and they have since agreed to the six party talks. Even so, The US and the UN will hold them to the sanctions levied against them after the tests.

GWB is doing the best he can with the N.Korean problem. This is one of the most challenging problems for any president, that is, using diplomacy with a freak like Kim Jong Il.

GWB has done better than most presidents in working with this rogue country, because he doesn't reward them for their misdeeds. GWB is willing to withhold food, if necessary, from these beggars, in order to get them to the bargaining table.

Once again, N.Korea has agreed to six way talks, because of pressure brought to bear by China. It's way too early to get really optimistic because we've been hear before. Just the same, it's a baby step in the right direction. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
