LOL, Well it depends on what kind of puppy it is. I have a lab, she is 14 now, but it took her, sit down for this one..........3 years!! LOL she is worth it, but she chewed everything!!!! Furniture, shoes, window sills, you name it. Get your dogs some rawhides, and orbee or a kong ball, and tennis balls! I have a chihuahua too, and she only chews her toys, but I've had rotts, hounds, labs, lots of dogs, but but the labs, OMG they are chewers!! Good Luck...Oh yeh there is this sour apple flavored stuff you can buy at pet stores, to spray on like furniture and stuff, to keep them from chewing a certain thing, not good for shoes and stuff, but great for other things. Don't spend money on a trainer either, most of the time, the dog would rather learn from you, and they learn better too!

I don't know about the dragging stuff into the yard thing, but a dog will have the urge to chew until almost 3 yrs old (possibly slightly less for small breeds). Even tho they have their adult teeth a 1 yr old, the teeth will still be shifting within the jaw into proper place. So the urge to chew will still be present. My American Eskimo was a chewer and destructive as a result... until she was about 3, then it was all over and my home was safe again!

Sounds to me like you have a lab. Dogs mature according to age and their breed. Some dogs will get out of the puppy stage before others. You can read about this on the internet if you will look for your breed of dog and then read the information about it.
For instance, a lab does not get over these things until it is about 3 years old while another breed of dog may mature and act calmer at a year old. Another thing to think about when you pick a dog is whether it is a working type dog such as a hunting dog or stock dog because these types of dogs need a job to do or they will find some way to use their energy.

I am not sure but I think until a year. My puppy is four months old and is chewing up everything in my house including my shoes. I have noticed that he is losing some of the baby teeth and getting new ones so I am hopeful he will stop chewing when all the new teeth have grown in.

it's not an age thing it's a training thing. Train the dog not to chew on things and it will stop. Most dogs always chew on something weather it is a stick or a rawhide bone. You might want to consider getting your dog a real doggie chew toy. My dog is 13 years old and still chews on the silicone bone I got her as a puppy. Get a good quality chew thing, it may cost but it is totally worth it.

Oops, perhaps I'd better look at your answers for tips on how to get them to stop chewing, etc.
My Setter is five & just last week she ate the straps off my shopping bag (that's the second this year ... aargh, you'd think that I'd learn) however she does only chew things & drag things (generally my clothes from the laundry hamper) into her bed when I go out. I think it's my punishment. Sigh.
Oh, that's five years by the way - not five months unfortunately.

Depends on the dog. My younger dog Buddy (mutt-lab and gordon setter mix) just quit his chewing this past year....he just turned 6. Occasionally he still likes to chew the hard plastic jewell case off of a CD - he really hates the Cranberries and I can't keep a copy of Oh Brother Where Are Thou? Sorry about your yard - but I'm sure you love your dog and your dog loves you and hey, they DO grow out of it.

he will be about 2 or 3 before he slows down his chewing, but he will not stop chewing stuff and dragging stuff to your yard. You have to stop that yourself by letting the dog know this kind of behavior is not accepted.

I don't think dogs stop chewing everything. My pug is a year old and she still gets into trouble. She likes my shoes that have heals. No, that is one problem that will never go away. Just when you see your dog chewing something, just simply say no and point your finger. Dog are not dumb and they know when they are doing something wrong.

Many puppies chew while their teeth are coming in. However a persistent habit needs to be trained out of them. Try enrolling your dog in an obedience class and teach it to not chew.
