Just remember this, the Marines would get pretty tired swimming to the site of the invasion if it weren't for the navy hauling them there and dumping them on the beach.

In the Marine Corp Hymn (their anthem) it says
"If the army and navy
ever look on Heavens scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
by UNTIED STATES MARINES"
This is interesting because it's true. Marines are first in, last out. They are often in the most danger and get the least amount of reenlistment money than any other branch. Not to mention there base pay (minimum wage) is also lower. Try watching Jarhead, just about everything in the movie is true, except most Marines aka Devil Dogs don't love their jobs. Marines also are NOT called soldiers in any way shape or form. They are TROOPS, Devil Dogs, or Marines but never a soldier. That's like calling a pit bull a Chihuahua. Marines go thru the hardest boot camp and training of all the branches of military. Hope that this helps a little bit.

The Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775 in the Tun Tavern (which was, indeed, a tavern.)in Philadelphia, PA. Presently, there are two places where Marines are trained, these being MCRD San Diego and MCRD Parris Island, SC. All recruits from west of the Mississippi are sent to San Diego and all recruits from the east are sent to Parris Island. It takes 13 weeks to become a Marine. The Marine Corps emblem is the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. Eagle-nation, Globe-worldwide, Anchor-naval tradition. The term "every Marine a riflemen" is true. All basically trained Marines are trained to shoot at 500 yards with the M-16A2 service rifle with deadly accuracy. The Marine Corps uniform is more recognizable worldwide than any other service. "The Few and The Proud" is a true statement. The army has more trucks than there are U.S. Marines. "Semper Fidelis" is the Marine's motto. It means "Always Faithful."

The Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775 in Tun Tavern, a bar, by four men.
And, a little side note:
'we stole the eagle from the air force,
the anchor from the navy
the rope from the army
and on the seventh day, when god rested, we overran his perimeter and stole the globe'
and that's how the eagle, globe and anchor came to be,

I was in the Air Force, and don't know much about it - but it is interesting that the Marines celebrate the "birthday" of the Marine Corps each year.
