I am planning a trip to Philly and NYC during Thanksgiving holidays. There are things I need help on.
1.When I make hotel reservation in NYC, which part of the city is not safe and I should avoid? I have gone for vacation alone many times in my life. Hopefully, I will go to NYC by myself this time. Is it safe to roam around the city at night? (Of course, I don’t mean 3 o’clock in the morning.) Some of my coworkers go to NYC on a regular basis for business. They have told me a lot of scary stories such as homeless people stay in the public bathroom to keep warm and junkies getting high in the public restroom.

2. I plan to spend a day at Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty. Is this enough?

3.I will take a bus from NYC to Philly. My hotel will be in Independence Park area. I know the bus station is pretty close to Independence Hall, but is it safe for me to walk from the bus station to the hotel? Remember I will have a bag of luggage. Everyone know I am a tourist.

Thanks

Is 1 ½ day enough to spend in Philly?

I am a food nazi. Please advise some good eats in NYC and Philly.

Your question could take a week to answer, but let me hit the highlights.

1. Any place they put a reputable hotel in NYC is safe. I don't know how much money you're willing to spend, but staying in the best areas isn't cheap. Pretty much any hotel you pick in Manhattan is going to be fine (it's just a place to sleep and shower, after all).

2. New York is one of the safest cities in the country. And there are people on the streets at all hours, you'll be fine.

3. Homeless people are just that, people. They're down on their luck and are just looking to survive. They're not a rampaging horde of murderous thugs, for heaven's sake. Where would you go to stay warm if you had nowhere to go? They aren't scary, they're just sad.

4. I wouldn't waste an entire day at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Get up early and see them both in a couple of hours one morning. There's far, far too much to see and do in New York to spend an entire day at those two places.

5. A few other places you must see - Brooklyn Bridge (take the time to walk across), Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station, Central Park, Rockfeller Center, Bryant Park and the NY Public Library, Washington Square Park, Katz's Deli, Little Italy, and if you get really ambitious, the Bronx Zoo and Brooklyn Heights.

6. Everyone in Philly is a tourist. You'll be fine.

Have a nice trip...Enjoy
