I know how it is I struggle with reading, I wish I had more patience to sit down and read. I like reading books with short stories in it that keeps my attention. I would suggest trying to read books like that @ first. I love travel, so one book I read was Chicken Soup for the Travelers Soul. You might want to try a book like that for whatever interests you.

Most kids your age do not enjoy reading.
Maybe you could find some magazines about Entertainment New or Hobbies- or something else that interests you and ask her if it would be OK for you to read those- since it is something you enjoy.
You could also talk to the Librarian about things that interest you and see if sahe could reccomend some books to read. Or read books based on movies you like.
It shouldn't be a big deal to read for 15-30 minutes every day or two. Especially now that it's getting colder. Find a snuggly place - stay warm and see if you can float away into an adventure somewhere. Or just read while you eat breakfast or lunch (that would still make her happy)
You may just find out you like it more then you thought.
Good luck- it's nice to see you are looking for ways to please your Mom's interest in your future.

I know what ya mean. I used to hate reading. I liked comics though & magizines. They aren't exactly novels, but you're reading. When you find something that really intrests you, you'll be hooked. That's how it happened with me.
I was bored. Picked up a book a friend's house & started reading. I was so intersted in it in just a few minutes, I wound up reading the entire series & then looked for more by that author. Interview with a Vampire was the hook for me. I've read all of the Vampire books, Mayfaire Witch books & a few others by Anne Rice.
Start with something light, that appeals to you. Might as well give it a shot. The more you read, the faster you read. This always helps in school. I used to always wish I liked to read, now I do!

Try by reading short stories that are about something you like. Fashion, make-up, movie stars etc. Pick out some of your favorite people and read about them. Learn new "cool" words to impress your friends. Maybe your mom too. The best readers are the ones who like to read. The ones who like to read are the best readers. Set your goal to be the best you can be. If you give it your best shot, you will help yourself not only by becoming a good reader but much more knowledgeable. Another thing that might work is read a magazine about stuff boys your age like. Impress them with your intellengence. They will take note and this will be an extra benefit. Reading is power!

I hate to say this, but why don't you learn to like reading? After all, there's so much to read in the world, and so much to learn and benefit from it. Some stories prove to be much more exciting and interesting than others, like Harry Potter for example. The newspaper tells us what's going on in the world, and recipe books will make one a better cook. Oh, the possiblities.
Well, what else can I say. This one adaptation of H. G. Wells, in The Time Machine, said that reading is fundamental. So you can't expect to go your life without learning to appreciate it, right?

Well not all people like reading but if you have the positive attitude it could become one of your favorite activities. I was like that too,I was living up to my mom's expectations and I don't regret it...it's good that I read a book a month. It helped me a lot when having a debate at school or even arguing with my friends. You can't even imagine how much knowledge it gives you.Listen to your mom.

Get some books on tape. You would still be enjoying the books, but you don't have to actually read them. I agree with mom though. Reading keeps your brain functional, and it's a great way to relive boredom especially if your grounded. No parent would take a book away even if your being punished.

Read more. You'll be glad you did! When you are able to read and comprehend things easily, it certainly makes other tasks easier!! I just answered a question not long ago "What is the most important subject?" with a simple "English". That most certainly includes reading, writing and spelling. Read books on topics you enjoy outside of school. Subscribe to a good magazine! You'll be surprised the cool stuff you can learn!
Keep reading!! You'll be glad you did!!

Find books you are interested in. I like to read science fiction and some mysteries, what I would call bubblegum for the brain, but I am also interested in dead Egyptians and Chinese history. Are you interested in fashion? music? How about a book about some famous musician? Could be a rock star, could be Mozart.
