Well first of all I think that you have to define "real".

I come home every night from my job and I sit with my family, I listen to my son and I try to figure out what he thinks is going on in the world around him. Every once in awhile he'll speak about something that he saw on the news or seen in a newspaper. He knows that people are out there trying to hurt us, but of course he doesn't understand why. The truth is so obscured and convuleted that there is no way any kind of story or fairy tale could ever relate it to him. He talks about his uncle sometimes who is fighting in Afghanistan. He doesn't understand how much danger he's in, or even the fact that he may not come home. He assumes that the next Christmas he'll come walking through the door to hug him, and even then he may not know why.

What he does understand though is the love of his father. His father isn't a coward because he didn't join the army, his father isn't scared of the Taliban or the Al-Quaida. His father doesn't have to leave his life behind to "go kick some ***" just to make his family proud. His father teaches his son how to tell right from wrong, good from evil, fariness from injustice. He teaches his son tolerance and most importantly gives him a sense of self worth in hopes that he will never have to prove himself better than what he already is.

The day will come one day where he will have to make a decision on what to do with his life. He may become a lawyer, or a mechanic or maybe a soldier. His father will be proud and support him in any decision he makes. If he chooses to go to war the father will be worried but still be proud because he knows that his son has made this decision for the right reason, whatever that may be. He will not do it for spite, for glory and surely not because there wasn't another option. He will do it because he loves his family and wants to protect them.

If he chooses to be a mechanic, he will have a family, maybe a son and he will talk to him every night just like his father did. He will then realize what that bond was and why it is so important to teach his children the values he was taught, not for the sake of tradition but because he will realize he's making a mark on the world and that his son may one day have a voice that may be heard by many. He will then realize that he is "real" man.

Thats "real" enough for me.

PS- Just out of curiosity, is YOUR father in Iraq? If he's not try your best to hide your disappointment, I'm sure he's still a good man.

I agree that all the men AND WOMEN in Iraq are all REAL. However, there are some of the men and women on YA that have served their times in the military honorably and even some of them are those that are in Iraq. Even the liberals, probably have some. We all have the right to our opinions but if they have been proved wrong or not, we do not have the right to try to force them on anyone else.

I was a marine in Viet Nam.Are you saying that I and a lot of other veterans are not "real men" ? I don't think we need to prove ourselves to you just because we are not in Iraq. We did our share before most of today's troops were born. How quickly we forget. Thank you.

What about me? Honorably discharged disabled veteran who served in the United States Army for 6 years and who served in Iraq. I'm not there but I have been there.

I do not agree. Some men who are in Iraq to not use guns. They may just use computers to help the people with the guns. Sometimes it's not just that they're brave. Some of these people need to go to college, and find that the only way to help them, is the government by going to war. By the way, they can be on Yahoo! Answers right now, there is internet there, y'know.

I am very appreciative of our troops over there, but I wouldn't say that all the real men are in Iraq. And some of our people over there are women.

Well, sweetie, I'd take offense if I thought you were doing anything but spouting Republican nonsense. However, when I was overseas, we were playing in the Southeast Asian War Games. By the way, why are YOU at Yahoo! Answers and not serving your country?

No and yes.

I believe the men over in Iraq are true men. I do not believe if they are not in Iraq, they are not men.

Juat because a man pick up a gun and goes to war does not make them a man. Its what i inide that makes the man. I support Bush and thi war but this quetion is jut tupid. Let me guess, your goal in life is to be a military wife and sit on your *** all day.
