Go to the Humane Society and spend some time interacting with the dogs there. Find one you like (it might take a few trips) and then adopt it.

You can also look at this site: www.poomixrescue.com

it is a website that has a lot of dogs available for adoption. They are all poodle mixes of different types.

When I was your age I had a Cockapoo. That is a mix of a poodle and a cocker spaniel. He was a great dog. Very smart and easy to train. He wasn't to large but he wasn't teeny tiny either - which would be a good idea. A teeny tiny dog might be too easy to hurt if your 2 year old sibling wasn't careful. I have twin 2 year olds and even when they are trying to be nice they can sometimes be rough. Cockapoos are fairly easy to groom if you didn't let it go too long inbetween brushings. :o)

Good lucK!

PS - Be careful about miniature breeds. They can be aggressive toward little chidren. Read about the breeds before you decide.

Many things have to be taken into consideration. Dogs depend on you a lot. You have to decide the family style, long hair, short hair, size and even some shed more than others. Will they be inside/outside. Dogs have been breed for working animals since the start of time so each breed will naturally carry a trait of work. Such as hunting dogs will want to hunt so if you live in the country without a fence they will run off to a scent and go hunting if you want them too or not. Sheep dogs are sheep hurders, they have alot of energy that needs to be filled but are very loyal, and will wait for your commands (mini collies, border collies etc.). Some like to bark and others come with complitcations such as some dogs are prone to certian illinesses. If you live in the city you have to make sure they are good in the home and are happy to be inside. Some are better with kids than others.. finding a mix breed with a few of the types you like is always a good opition. There are many dogs put to sleep daily that are in shelters looking for good homes and many are already trained. Believe me puppy training can be a real job and stressful even though puppies are very cute.
there are many sites on the internet that helps you pick by offering test or questions. Go to google and put in "picking the right dog for you"
good luck and hope you have many happy memories

I would suggest going to a local shelter, where they know the dogs tempermant and can help you find the perfect dog for your situation. Use www.petfinder.com this helps find shelters in your area, and the adoptable pets they currently have (it gives short description, age, size, etc.).

Some of the small breeds such as chihuahua's tend to be better with adults. I've seen smaller dogs snap at children 13 and under, protectively. If you have a 2 year-old sister, I would AVOID a tiny dog.

Do some research on the size you like and yoru living situations, this site should help: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/searchcategories.htm

Its always better to get a shelter dog (mixed breeds tend to have less health problems plus you get that good feeling).

Good Luck!

Labradors. REALLY!!!!!! They're so loving toward the owner.

Chihuahuas are not the dog I'll suggest. since they are cold constantly, they bark at everything that passes by and won't stop barking until about an hour later. (since I'm 6'4 in height) they try to bite me in the back of the legs. even my own chihuahua (i had one) was well grown into my family and has attempted to bite me when ever i wasn't looking, or constantly day and night bark at me. Not to spam or abuse anyone (please don't take this seriously) they hump just about everything. Labradors are the most kind and generous. I recommended for all those who love dogs, they don't bark constantly, they don't eat alot, they like to get wet, (my lab likes to grab the hose that's is used to water plants, and waits for some one to pass by, then runs up to the person wetting them LOL) they don't eat alot (just what they need) they're incredible in means of shows, hunting, family dog, guard dogs, and for those who are challenged. They are not that big, maybe normal and a bit smaller. Oh they know when you're feeling well or stressed, so they come lick the hand of the owner, cause it seems it makes them feel bad. possible? yet!! they're cute really!! looks at some images in yahoo pictures. I recommend this breed for all humans. well tempered, cute, etc. RECOMMENDED BREED!!!!!!!!!!! look into it (Typed from an expericened Labrador owner)

What about a chihuahua? Since you like minis what about a miniature pinscher? Pug? Pomeranian? Papillon? Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? I'm getting all of these dogs from the toy group. The toy group is made up of small breeds that would probably make good house pets. You should look up Toy Dogs. I hope this is helping!

It is just according what breed of dog you like most and the price you would be willing to pay for one,as some breeds are more expensive than others. The Chihuahuas are very easy to maintain, but most are nippy little pets, the Brussel Griffon is a great ,loving, very intelligent non-shedding little breed, easy to maintain, but most are higher in price. The Maltese requires daily brushing, but are nice little pets. The Yorkie is a cute breed, but also requires daily brushing unless coats are groomed in the Puppy Cut.The Poms are very active pets, but also require daily brushing.I would suggest out of all the above I would have to say my Mini Schnauzer requires very little upkeep and is very adaptable to any family.

I a girl your age also intrested in buying a new small puppy who never had a dog before. I have a couple of dogs you might be intrested in that I am considering.
1. Maltese (cute with short hair in my opinion)
2. toy fox terrier
3. Sheltie (a little on the larger side, grow to 14 inchs)

Good luck with your new friend!!!

Get a rat terrier. They are very small, have short hair, and are extremely intelligent. Therefore, little grooming, easy to train, and take up very little space. There are also many mixes out there. I would suggest getting one through a shelter or rescue, as they will have their shots and will be cheaper. Good luck!
