My cat likes to run around crazy at night & makes this funny sound. It's almost like a meow but he doesn't open his mouth so it's more like a humming sound. Does anyone know why cats do this? Thank you

Hi Jenna...cats make this sound when they see something that is exciting beyond belief. Sometimes they will sound like they are quiver-meowing, chirping and others almost like barking. This is quite commonly seen in cats and is quite natural as well. Here's a couple videos of cat's chirping:

I have to confess I’ve never heard anyone describe a cat to make a humming sound. I suspect that the humming sound is your cat’s unique method of purring

Jenna I happen to work for a vets office . I have had many cats make that noise and it is very common. but its not purring sorry. This is their own voice and usually it to get your attention. Right now the season are changing and that the reason for the behavior. most animals act percular when their enviroment changes. my cat acts silly when me and my husband come home because he has been alone all day. It is also made when they are playing.. i look at the noise as contentment and laughter just in cat language.
