I am going to be applying for a schengen visa withmy main destination being italy, so i just want to know the likeliness of me actaully getting the visa from the italian consulate. i already know people in italy... where i will be going, and they are willing to write me a letter of invite...has anyone been throught the process before?

Sure. The consulate will ask you for the invitation letter. In the application you will be reqired to indicate some information about yourself, why you want to go in Europe, what is the main purpose etc... Moreover, they can ask you for official reservation from hotel, where you are going to stay, or if you are going to stay with your friends - they have to indicate this fact in the invitation letter.
