I'm making yogurt and need to check the temp (180 degrees). The only kind of thermometer I have is a candy/fry one. Will this work?

As long as it reads low enought, you can pick up an instant read at most box stores for $5 or so. 180 is a way too hot yogurt lactobacillus is killed if exposed to temperatures over 130 f. Try 115 to 120 it really likes to grow at 122. For a starter try Dannon Plain yogurt.

Good cooking

I don't think so - it probably isn't accurate at the lower temperatures used for yogurt.

BTW - 180 degrees sounds pretty hot for yogurt.
