I went grocery shopping yesterday and packed my freezer pretty full. (I need to clean some stuff out, but didn't have time.) This morning I woke up and the door was a couple of inches open. Some food toward the front had started to thaw. I was in a hurry to go to work and so I just closed it and left. How do I know if anything is spoiled? (It was open a max of 8 hours, hopefully less.)

*If food is "partially" thawed but still has some ice crystals, it can be re-frozen safely and without much quality loss.

*If the food was "Thawed" but still "refridgerator cold" it should be cooked before re-freezing or consuming.

*If the food was thawed and not refridgerator cold it should be thrown out!

Keep in mind...the more you process a food...(ie: freezing, cooking, re-freezing) If you do it safely it will be ok to eat but each time you process you loose quality.

How do you know if food is spoiled. The short answer is you dont.
I would try and use some of the stuff ,if i could not use the rest
within a day or so i would throw it out. I had the same Problem
myself yesterday there was a Power failure for three hours.I had
some Mackeral in the Freezer, and i did not want to chance
putting it back in Freezer,it does not look as if i will be using it so
wil chuck it out.You cant take any Chances with youre Health
you could end up with very nasty Food Poisoning. At the very
least you could be on the Throne for days and Retching youre Guts up I will leave the rest to youre Imagination.

Most items can be refrozen safely even if they were fully thawed. I would throw out any meat near the door if you accidently thawed it just because of the risk. Other food items should be fine.
