u should say that u and ur ex's time has come and passed and that u've moved on.. let them know that it's backwards to move backwards.... u've made piece w/ur old relationship and that your moving on to bigger and better things... and let the friend know to stop being a messenger....

The friends are most likely asking you as a joke. But if they aren't then it depends on how you feel about him. Any ex that hasn't talked to you in 2 years is just a waste of time. Don't get all twisted in the past.

ask his friend to ask HIM to talk to you. having middle-men really isnt sincere at all.
if he does want to go back with you, hang out, etc... be sure what is it he really wants. relationship? friendship?
friendship... if you have forgiven him enough, i say go for it
relationship, if you have gotten over the past and still love him, why not.. but lay down the ground rules.
i dont suggest you go back to him immediately. re-work the whole friendship first. get to know him again. 2 years? thats a lot to miss out.

If you still have feelings for him, maybe try something small, like coffee or lunch. But if you don't, then kick him to the curb and say NO!
