Lcd tv's have clear pictures. but what does an hdtv do? is the picture just a little more clear than the lcd tv?

Hi. LCDs have a native resolution that may or may not match HDTV. The clearest picture on an LCD is a 1:1 match for the actual pixels. HDTV is good, even great. but is limited to 1080 lines.

LCD is liquid crystal display. HDTV is high definition television. LCD is the tv technology, hdtv is the resolution of the source of video. Example - satellite and cable.
