This often happens. For reading, you can look at each word as long as you need. You can go back and read it two or three times until you understand. For listening, you have only one chance, and at one speed.
Also, written words are always the same, there are no accents or pronunciation differences.
To improve at conversation, you just have to practice speaking in the new language. It is hard and a little embarassing at first. I know. But, with some nice friends to help you will improve.
(Hearing song lyrics is still very hard for me though, even after many years)

Different people learn things in different ways. You are a visual learner. You learn by seeing. Some people can learn by listening and those people don't understand that you are different.
Here is what to do: watch television in English and get closed captioning on your screen. Some TV's come with a device that lets you turn on printed words at the bottom of the screen while the people are talking. You can read what is being said while you listen to how it sounds. That should help. And then read books in English, too.
I am the same way. I can look at written Spanish and figure out what it says, but when people speak Spanish fast, I get lost.
Bien fortuna.

Well it is just matter of practice if you can read the lyrics of a song and listen to it at the same time, your eyes will tell your ear what to expect and this will help you to hear the pronunciation of the words , I am a native Spanish speaker and it took a bit to get pretty good with my listening.

You can improve your listening by listening. Since you have Internet access, you can use the Internet to listen to many samples of American English. If you want to learn to understand British English, you can listen to British English, too.

Here's a famous ESL listening site:

Well, it just all comes down to practice. Just talk to people, and you'll get used to the way they sound, and you'll pick up words quicker. Just hang in there, and it'll get easier. As far as music is concerned, a lot of singers don't sing very clearly, and I tend to have trouble understanding what they're saying. That's just how people sing, so don't worry about that.

ojo, esto pasa a cada persona que esta aprendiendo una nueva idioma. Yo vivo en el Peru pero mi lengua materna es el ingles y entiendo lo que te pasa (regaeton es casi imposible para comprender). La unica cosa que te va a ayudar es la practica. Ve tele en ingles como canal sony y Fox y si tu comprension es buena entonces comprate un DVD y ponga los subtitulos en ingles asi que puedes ir escuchando y leendo (los subtitulos en ingles son confiables, no como las traducciones).
