I gave birth on sept. 22. I bleed for 4 weeks. A few days later I started bleeding again. This time really heavy and with cramps. My DR. said is most likely my real period now. How long can your first period last after giving birth?

First of all, congratulations on giving birth! If it lasts longer than your regular period, it's probably still the post-natal bleeding; and don't forget your cycle might be completely different than before you gave birth. You may flow much heavier than before, or lighter. It may last longer or not as long as you used to. I always got crampy towards the end of that post-natal "flow" and my real periods didn't start for several months after I gave birth- even longer when you breast-feed.

I'd say your doctor's advice is just about right. Unless your heavy bleeding persists a lot longer than your usual pre-pregnancy periods lasted, I wouldn't be overly concerned. If you do feel that it has lasted too long, then contacting your doctor is a good thing to do. You know your body best - when all is said and done, go with your own instincts.

It will probably last the same as your usual period does - give or take a few days.

The other bleeding you had was normal after delivery and not period-related, as you know.

It sounds like a normal after birth period. Mine always lasted about a week.

Mine usually is the same length of time. But as far as you bleeding after birth, that sounds normal. I always tail off for a week and then it starts back and like your doc said, my doc says the same.
