Many, many things would be nice.
1) A good pair of sneakers. Take him out to a good place like The Running Room and get him into a pair of good cross-trainers. He'll love you for it in the end.
2) A Gerber multitool. He might get one issued at some point, but it's way too useful not to have one.
3) An IPod loaded with his favourite music and small speakers. Music always helps whiling away the long hours polishing boots in the shacks. Trust me. Also, if you get a big one, get a few movies in there too. And some pictures.
4) Anything to make his life easier, like a good electric razor. Take my word for it, those few minutes shaved off, no pun intended, every morning come in handy just before inspection.

Since he is a Canadian soldier there are two gifts you can give him that will make him happy.
Extra money to buy Tim Hortons coffee on the Canadian base since one there.
A lot of candies for when he sees those kids he will want to give them something so treats to give out. For he will most likely be in communities on patrol.
And tell Him this Torontonian wishes him luck, and safe return.
And that Taliban Jack does not speak for this canadian.
If he hasn't seen it yet there is a poem from a soldier to Jackie boy on the link below.

A great idea for a personal and unique gift is a handmade painting made from a photo that you send.
Check out this site: www.paintyourlife.com
The prices are reasonable and the outcome is amazing.

Beans, bullets and bandages. And since he's Canadian, you might want to throw in some Tim Horton's coupon's and a helicopter.
