"Throw in the towel" is a euphamism for a boxing move.

In boxing, if a member of the boxers team threw a towel into the ring, that would signal to the referee that the team wanted the fight to quit immediately. They would do this to either "give up" or because the boxer was being beaten so badly, they wanted to stop the fight to minimize the damage.

Therefore, to "throw in the towel" means to quit or surrender.

In a wrestling match, if a competitor is being dominated and has no chance to turn things around, the coach will throw the sweat towel into the ring telling the referee that they are giving up or conceding the match. So we have adopted the term to mean any time that we give up on an effort that we have no chance of succeeding.
