The prophets in the old testament served at least four purposes.
1) To make their contemporaries aware of their responsibilities to God (Yahweh, or Jehovah).
2) To make them aware of the consequences when they were displeasing God. Warn them of dangers.
3) To point forward to the Messiah - giving signs as to whom he would be, where he would appear and what he would do.
4) To point the way for future blessings on Earth and In God's
Kingdom
In the NT Prophets made known that Jesus was the Messiah, through whom God's name would be sanctified and His Kingdom come.
Pointed forward to what blessings would come under his Kingdom.
Showed the fulfillment of OT prophesy
Warned of immediate things affecting God's people - including the destruction of Jerusalem.
Described the things leading up to Jesus return - foretold preaching that would be done as a witness, before the end of the wicked world and the apathy that would be rife in the world.
revealed the duties of those who would go to heaven
Revealed thing up to more that 1000 years into our future.

The prophets of the Hebew/Aramaic part of the Bible all tried to do God's will even if they were afraid of the consequence, their Job was to reveal God's will and point to the Messiah. The Prophets of the Christian Greek part of the Bible were much the same, except that they point to Jesus as the Messiah, that the Messiah had already come in the flesh.

Basically a bunch of hallucinating , desperate people with a rampant imagination and no education. Possibly drug users,or mentally suspect individuals who heard voices, had dreams, and scared the crap out of their illiterate countrymen! That should do for homework.

They were mesengers sent by God to individuals, groups, or nations. They were often unwilling and had to be cohersed by God. The message they carried, was not their own, but the message God gave them to deliver. There were of course false prophets, who carried their own message for whatever polical objective they desired.
