It is in the details. Guys lie in color. They give you details you didn't ask for, want or are not part of the conversation. If you pay attention they will slip up in some manner. They always do and the truth comes out. Be patient and you will find out soon enough.

Seriously though. Listen to what he says if he is lying he will try to justify, he may even admit things you know nothing about. He might stumble over his words and asked nervous. I am having a hard time thinking up an example, but just watch his body language and confidence level. If he is tell the truth he will not be concerned about you believing him and will be more confident. If what he is saying does not make sense, he is proabbly lying.

well most of the time if it sounds to good to be true it probally isn't, and also if he goes on and on about where he's been or who he was with, it's a lie. most of the times men lie just to lie.(i'ts a man thing).
