you say not to be rude, but ,fact is, this works. Cats that are worth their salt can figure out a trash can lid. And once they've tasted food they think better than their own, they'll go to almost any length to get it. If your kitten constantly gets in the trash can, then i reccommend when the kitten is trying to get into it so get some goodies, get hold of it by the back of the neck, (the sweet spot- it doesn't hurt)reach eye contact and say "no." not yelling, just firmly. then empty the trash. the next time he does it, do the same over again but then put the cat in the empty trash can and make sure he can't get out for around 5 minutes. This may need to be repeated, but in time the problem should dissappear.

A tight lid may work but cats are clever and inquisitive. A bad smelling thing is probably the best idea because cats are very clean and fussy, unlike a dog that will empty any bin. I do not put anything that maybe attractive to my cat in the inside bin, I put is a small bag and take the bag to the outside bin (like meat wrappers). Most of left over food and veggie skins goes to our chickens. My cat does also not like eating food which has been in her dish too long so maybe the food in the dish is not fresh enough. Close the dry cat food bag properly. Try putting less cat food, more often. Cats also like to eat fresh meat. I cook chicken livers for my cat. I know cats can eat raw meat but I choose not to encourage this part of a cat. Also less chance of the cat getting worms from cooked meat.

I would not leave food sitting in a bowl waiting for the cat to eat. It is best to place the beef meat in the kittens bowl when you know that the kitten needs to eat. Also it is best to wrap up the trash, closed tight in a bag and put outside to avoid the cat from smelling the odors from the can in the trash. Pets like the smell of freshly prepared food. The aroma wears off when the food is left sitting all day.

If I had the choice of Beef scraps or dry cat food, um let me think! You have stated it to be a kitten, he will learn with age, just like a toddler. For now, keep the can locked up. Also, I noticed that you always have a bowl of food down for him - every Vet I have ever spoken to says NO, don't do that. He will look for something different - just put the amount he will eat (at one time) in the bowl and then remove it. If he is still hungry, he will let you know, but just give him a little more at a time. Good luck.

You can try hot sauce if you like, by just putting alittle around the edge. When he goes to get in the trash he will get the stuff on his paws and lick it off. Cats cant stand anything hot.
Also try putting your table scraps or any other food in a different bin with a heavy top. Preferably one that you step on the bottom to open the top.
I also know most cats hate the smell of moth balls. You can try by putting some at the bottom of your trash can before putting the bag.

He doesn't understand the concept of trash. To him, meat in the trashcan is just another meal in a different type of dish. Cats have a strong instinct to eat meat over other types of food (don't let him eat beef, however.) There are also other enticing 'toys' in the typical trashcan, and he's likely to think that's just where you keep them for him. "Training" is most likely going to be unrewarding in this case.
Put it in the cabinet under the sink where he can't get to it, or get a trashcan with a firmly self-closing lid (like those stainless steel ones with the foot pedals.) It's important for you to protect him from himself, as we see many medical and surgical emergencies resulting from pets getting into the trash can.

Get a trash can with a lid on it. a snap on lid, or put a bungee cord over teh lid to keep him from knocking it off.. we did this to a outside garbage cans to keep the possoms and coons out... course they evewrntually figured it out.. but a cat shouldnt. if you see the cat near the can, squirt it with water.

Anything that will attract a cat, (I have 2), I wrap up in a plastic grocery bag before throwing it in the trash. I rinse out all containers. If it's going to be particularly attractive to them, I put it in a plastic bag and then in the refrigerator until I take the trash out.

Put some lemon/orange or grapefruit peel anywhere you do not want the kitten to go. Cat's detest the smell of citrus fruit. They also hate mentol. Lemon oil works too but not the juice.
