Why do you want to breed your dog? If you have to ask these questions then you obviously don't know anything about breeding dogs and you shouldn't. Dogs don't get "periods" they come into "heat".
So many "well-intentioned" people breed their dogs just because they think it will be "enjoyable" or that they will make money doing it. It's "a lot of work, worry and it's expensive".
Do you have homes lined up for the puppies? Are you going to take back any dogs that potential owners "return" and take care of them?
If you are not a "professional breeder/show person", don't know the breed "standards", don't understand "genetics" and are not breeding to "improve the breed" - please don't breed your dog!
All you have to do is look in the German Shepherd Rescues and see how many dogs are "homeless". We ran a rescue for German Shepherds and Dobermans and we are still involved in "rescue". Please don't add to the problem, become part of the solution - adopt another German Shepherd if you want one.
I'm not trying to be mean, and I apologize if I sound that way. It's just that when you work with all these abandoned dogs who some people just "toss" aside like they were garbage, the last thing you want to see is someone else getting into "breeding their dogs".

Dogs don't have periods. They have heat cycles. Heat cycles usually occur twice yearly, 6 months apart but can happen as often as three times a year.
Dogs of any breed should never be bred under the age of 2. Also before considering breeding a dog needs to be given and pass health tests (not simple vet exams), this is especially important for breeds like the GSD. GSD are very very prone to hip dysplasia, back issues, heart issues, skin issues, thyroid issues and temperament issues. They need to have an impeccable pedigree and be evaluated to see if they conform to breed standard and are worthy of being bred.
Before breeding you need to learn a lot about your breed, breeding practices, whelping, newborn care, etc
Breeding is a BIG responsability!!!!!

Anywhere between 6months to a year. You shouldn't breed your dog until age two that way she is mature enough. But don't breed your dog unless if you are a serious breeder, there are so many unwanted dogs out there why contribute to the problem?

Please dont breed!!!!! if you dont know anything about this then do us all a favor and spay your female!!!! is your female up to the breed standard, have her hips been x-rayed,do you know she is free of genetic health problems known to GSD's ?? are you prepared for the expense of puppies? check out your local shelters and rescues see how many dogs are waiting to find homes....they all started out as puppies that someone felt the need to bring into this world......also...dont breed unless you can rescue!!!!!

they dont but they do go into heat.
Are you sure you want to breed? For me to just keep up feeder mice it is expensive and a dog will be more. Also you risk the chance of her dieing. Is that what you want?

Dogs don't have periods, they have "heat cycles" and usually begin around 5-6 months. If I were you, I'd let the dog go until it's second or third cycle before breeding to give the uterus and hips time to mature...

Dogs don`t have periods. It is irresponsible and cruel to breed animals when you don`t know anything about them.
