I have been getting my hair highlighted blonde for many years, from my natural brunette color. I decided to go back to brunette and had my hair dyed a walnut color in the salon. Two and a half weeks later, the color is starting to fade dramatically and the old blonde highlights are starting to show through. Do you think my hairdresser did something wrong? What should I have done to ensure that the color stays next time?

I am a hairdresser since 1989. I have also been an educator for a major color line. It is natural for fading to occur over highlighted hair. There are a few things you can do. Ask your stylist if the color line she uses has a maintenance program for you to take home, such as colored shampoos (with your color added to the bottle) toning foams for at home use and color sealing conditioners. Please don't use Suave, Pantene or Herbal Essence. You just invested money in yourself and if you are using any of these you are just washing it down the drain. The fading should stop after the next time or two. If she didn't fill the blonde hair before applying the color that is why it is fading now. Therefore the next time you have it colored this color will act as a filler.

Ask yourself the following questions:

-What kind of shampoo do I use?
-What kind of dye did the salon use?

If the salonist used temporary or semi-permanent dye this may be the problem; also use a shampoo that is specifically for colored hair. Sometimes when you are going from one end to another this may happen. I naturally have black hair and then dyed my hair chocolate brown with blonde highlights, and then I went lighter afterwards; recently I wanted to go to dark brown and went to the salon for a permanent dye. After paying $220 bucks to get it done, I started to see the highlights again with a green hue. I had to go back and get it done again (that was four months ago) and I have not had any problems since. Just make sure that they use a permanent dye.

John Frieda also has a hair glaze on the market right now that preserves that color of your hair.

Good luck!

I'm a colorist and I'm here to help you.....
First the reason that it fades... When we lighten hair we do it by removing pigments from the hair shaft. Color in your hair shaft is made of color molecules to lighten your hair we remove them until we have reached the desired color.
Second when we darken hair we deposit color molecules INTO the hair shaft these molecules cling to the others in your hair shaft.
Now when we color over hair that has been lighten sometime there is not enough color molecules for the color we are putting in to cling to, so they wash out fast because there is nothing for them to hold onto. When this happen we love to get that call from you telling us, that way we can get you in right away and get more color on there. It allows the color to have more color to "grab" on to. We can also use a "filler" to help give the color something to stick to. Call the salon that did your tint back and tell them. Trust me you did nothing wrong and neither did your stylist. I often tell new clients when the say they want to go darker that I have just a comb not a magic wand. If it was rocket science anyone could do our job but each color is different and we need to know your hair to give yo the best service we can. So make the call and everyone will be happy. Good Luck.

The same thing happened to me. The hairdresser didn't do anything wrong, thats just what happens when you color over previously lightened hair, it will eventually show through.

Call your hairdresser back and tell him/her that your old color is already showing through, and tell him/her that you want a "filler" put into your hair. They put it in your hair before they color it and it helps the new color last MUCH MUCH longer.
Another suggestion, you might want to try going a little bit darker than the color you want.

Unfortunately when you have blonde on highlights and go back to dark the color will always fade and the highlights or blonde will start to come back out. I have gone back and forth several time but I end up liking the color it comes out when the color starts to fade. Nothing you can do to prevent it

ok, a pair of persons have instructed you this would't be carried out and others have reported it may. properly, it may - with a professional colour stripper!!! in spite of the incontrovertible fact which you would be able to desire to video show that your hair will by no potential be in stable situation afterwards (it is going to sense dry and particularly disheveled whilst its moist). you will desire some very stable conditioner and that i'd advise you get a on an popular basis restructuring conditioner it is left on your hair. Your hair won't bypass lower back to strawberry blonde from black! it is going to bypass orange/yellow at maximum suitable. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that the stable subject is, is which you would be able to colour over at the instant - no waiting time. am i able to point which you do no longer use an eternal colour. attempt making use of non everlasting colour as this would fade out progressively. Your hairdresser could use a Quasi/Demi colour which might final longer than a non everlasting yet provides you with an glaring root advance. those innovations will additionally help to place some situation lower back into your hair. uncertain how long your hair is yet getting it decrease shorter will rather assist you. once you're waiting to get it decrease particularly short then do no longer difficulty with stripping. Tie or clip it as much as cover lots of the regrowth and attempt waiting for yet another 6-8 weeks then bypass get it decrease. regardless of you pick to do, confirm you bypass to a stable hairdresser. Ask around, as innovations are the main suitable source. finally, stable success with this and PLEASE do no longer dye your hair black lower back - that's by no potential properly rather worth the difficulty.

Well, I think you been highlighting it too much. The hair dresser could've did something wrong, that's a possibility. You need to go to her and see about it. If it was me, I woud've had a fit! I would've went down there and started tripping or I would go to court because about my hair, I don't play! Trust and believe! So whatever you feel comfortable with doing, do ya thang cause' girl that is your hair and I know you don't want to walk around with your hair looking a mess because you are a female and what female likes to do that? Or your hair might even fall out, now I know you don't want that to happen and I don't even know you at all! You know what I mean? Take Care!!!!!

Evelyn is right. When you try to dye darker on top of blond, it tends to fade quickly. I also agree though that it looks pretty good though, not so much like roots, more like sun kissed hair instead. My hair is doing the same thing, but it looks good especially this time of year when summer is fading.

In just 2 weeks? that shouldn't have happened...I dye my hair from a dark brunette to a dirty blonde and it always lasts about 2 months until my roots show....i think your hairstylist did something really bad.....next time you should either go to another one
