I think that most of the time, people who listen to the voices in their head arent actually dumb, but mentally instable. If the voices sounded intelligent, or if they were so annoying that the only way to get rid of them was to do the thing they asked, then I can see how people would listen.
If it were me, I would probably consult a doctor if I thought the dog was telling me something to do! I would worry that I had eaten something strange.

This isn't a religious question. It's question about serial killer, David Berkowitz, and he probably didn't really believe the neighbor's dog talked to him. Now if you had asked, "Why would you actually listen to the voice in your head you say is God (Jesus)" then we'd have something.

"Dumb" is the wrong word. Mentally ill people are often quite intelligent, but they are lacking something in their brain that lets them tell the difference between delusions and real happenings. Sad, really - so many lives are wasted because people can't function when that happens, even if they are very smart.

There actually are psychological conditions where things like that will happen. Those voices are so cronic, that the patient will sooner or later give in to them, unless they really know what's going on before hand.....

The voices in your head can often be convincing. It's not a matter of intelligence either.

I'd obey if I were schizophrenic. That's usually what happens when folks do something based on the voices in their head.
Son of Sam -- with the whole dog thing -- may be a schizophrenic, but I dunno if that was ever proven. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/crime/caseclosed/berkowitz1.shtml) I know that was a big discussion topic after he told folks his neighbor's dog told him to kill.

I've never listened to the stupid voices in my head. I only listen to the smart ones.
