I have a dog (male) that I got at the pound 7 months ago, hes now 10 months, he is a mix shepard/terrier (more terrier hes very small). I am going to be getting him a play mate so I need to know what breed is good, male or female, and age of the dog i should get. I am not home much, my dog is an inside dog, i take him for walks in the morning and night and take him to the dog park several times a week....so whats your opinion on what kind of dog i should get?? PS i dont want a small dog like a yorkie and i dont want a big dog like a lab just a med. sized dog.

How about a cocker spaniel, they are great dogs, very friendly and lots of fun.

Are you *really* sure you want another dog?

Before you even think about another dog, consider doing some serious reading about the Shepard and the Terrier. Both behaviors are well known; the Canine Genome project and the study with the cross of the Border Collie and the Newfoundland taught us much about canine behavior and mixed breeds. Be very careful before you get another dog to leave with another dog, inside; be carefull with the attempted mixture of different conceptually oriented breeds; age is almost a minor consideration; expected behavior is the most important, it seems to me.

(Incidentally, I certainly hope you don't have a 'smart' dog; if you leave it alone a lot, you have my sympathy.)

Why not go back to the shelter and adopt an older dog? Shelter volunteers can tell you which dogs will best fit your lifestyle and your dog can meet the potential new housemate before he/she comes home.

Breed/gender does not determine if 2 dogs will get along, every dog is different and has a unique personality, which is why getting a shelter dog (and having the dogs meet) is an ideal situation.

I would definitely go with a Boston Terrier. They're medium-sized. Get along well with virtually every person and animal. They prefer to be indoors. They love to play. Plus they're SO funny. My dog Rocky has me laughing for hours on end! I'm not sure about whether you should get a male or female though. I personally prefer boys. Have fun finding your new friend!

i would get the same breed or something about the same size and i would reccomend getting a female bacause if you have 2 males they will most likely fight for territory and dominance i would also reccomend it to be around the same age oh yeah i would also have the 2 of them meet befor actualy adopting the dog make sure they are both on a leash that way just incase they dont like each other there wont be a fight. i personaly would get a jack-russel they are very energetic and they will be calm when you want them to they listen very well.

I would say go back to the shelter as well. Talk to the people that run it to see if you can bring your dog with you, and he can help pick out a friend. Good luck!
